'Happy Open' more like Open from hell for Canadians. Now Pospisil goes out to Dr. Ivo.

Isner wins 67 76 76 76.
A match with no breaks. Isner hit 46 aces.

Looks like Milos isn't ready to relinquish the title of Canada's best hope, eh?

Out of the top 20 seeds on the Men's draw only two lost their opening round matches....Shapo and Felix. Not a good start of the year for Canadian Men's tennis but plenty of time to turn it around!

Well, Genie Bouchard gave her a heck of a match in Auckland a week or so ago. Amanda was struggling with her ground strokes (very inconsistent), it may have carried over to this match.

Typical Cdn letdowns. This is why Bianca is special.
and El Shapo was downright embarrassing with his temper tantrum.

Or is it more likely just the inconsistency of youth. I mean Casper Rudd (21 years old), Couretin Moutet (20 years old), and Ugo Humbert (21 years old) also lost their first round matches at the Aussie Open. Humbert is coming off a victory over Shapo as well as just winning his first ATP tourney and loses yesterday to Aussie John Millman (not totally a surprise, Millman is no slouch plus had the home crowd support behind him).
Also, due to the ATP Cup as well as playing the week before in Adelaide and Auckland, both Felix and Shapo may not have had the freshest of legs. Scheduling is very important component of tour success.

Very true, sometimes it's just bad luck. Federer lost in the first round of Wimbledon two years in a row when he was younger, Nadal lost in the first round of the Aussie Open a couple of years ago. Before Sampras won the US Open as a teen he lost in the first round of Wimbledon. Sometimes this happens, it's super disappointing but if they bounce back then we will all forget the bad start to the season.

This could be a surprising year for Raonic. Zero expectations coming in. If he's finally able to stay healthy again, we might find him back in the top 20 in a hurry.

I'd say in Denis's case it's actually been pretty consistent, considering he's lost in the first round three of the past four majors. His best result is still his first US Open in 2017. Clearly, things are not trending in the right direction on the big stage.
Felix has only made it past the first round in a major once but that's far more understandable since he's had fewer opportunities to do so.

I just hope Denis sticks with the tutelage of Youzhny, he didn't play well at the Aussie Open, but since Youzhny has come on board, Shapo's game has greatly improved.
I was reading that Felix was trying a different stick at the ATP Cup and switched back to his old one for the Adelaide tourney. He needs to get that sorted out along with his service ball toss.

I think that for Felix it clearly is a couple of mechanical things that cause problems for him, and I agree, it's particularly with the ball toss and serve timing. When it clicks, everything goes right, and he just needs to get it sorted so it never loses that timing. I don't think it's mental with him.
With Denis it's 100% between the ears, at this point. Initially he had some problems of his own with serve timing and particularly play at net, and he's come miles in both areas (especially volleys). But some weeks he shows up to a tournament and just isn't in the zone, and once things start to unravel they just come apart completely.

It's actually just typical Johnny Makarov anti-Canadian bigotry. It's been his schtick since day 1 in these threads.

Hah, I would hope people have better things to spend their time on than that match.

lol - That's why you should PVR it, zoom through the commercials, watch a little action, if it looks good, keep watching, if not, zoom to the end to see who wins.
