They specifically signed a lot of guys to AHL deals last season as a means of creating competition internally. If you suck, you're off to ECHL Utah for a spell.

Source says #mnwild signs offensive Dman Brian Connelly of Bloomington to a 2-year, 2-way deal (2nd-leading AHL blue-line scorer last yr)

Well, that's too bad.

I wonder if Feaster offered him an equal deal and he just wanted to try his luck elsewhere.

Don't blame him for going to Minny I guess, and leaves the Flames org. We have a lot of guys ahead of him on the depth chart, and Minny might be a place he can steal an NHL roster spot.

Good luck Connelly.

I never really expected Connelly to do much other then help our farm team out. I think we have better OFD's on our depth chart that are more of a defensive liability, I honestly don't think Connelly was worth wasting a contract.

Good luck to him though.

Some of the season ticket holders are unhappy because Feaster lost Rheault, Connelly, and Jessiman.

I think this is a ridiculous complaint because Street is an upgrade on Rheault, Reinhart full-time is a HUGE upgrade on Jessiman. The only loss is Connelly's offense, which wasn't even all that great once he came to the Heat. Plus he was brutal defensively, so there's no loss there.

I hate to say this because they're great fans, but your average Heat fan doesn't know very much about the management of a hockey team.

He already has

That kid looked head and shoulders above most of the regular Heat players (except for Byron and Nemisz). I think he'll be a full-time Flame by 2013-14. This season, he'll get a call when/if injuries happen.

You being a regular Heat watcher, how does Reinhart compare to Backlund when he played in the AHL?

It's still a pretty small sample size right now. I've only seen him play a couple of AHL games yet. Usually when kids get brought up from junior they play better than they normally would throughout a 76 game schedule. Same goes with when an AHL player gets called up to the NHL. They'll usually play quite a bit better than normal in the first few games.

So right now, I'm pretty excited about watching a full season of Max and seeing how he fares because if his three game stint is any indication (which it probably isn't) he should have a pretty good rookie season.

It's kind of funny, because I'll watch a player with the Heat and he'll actually look quite a bit better than he did with the Heat.

I'll let you know once the season starts, but I would expect Max to be better because even though Backlund put up OK points, he didn't look great out there. He looks way better as a Flame.

I like listening to Weisbrod and even Conroy talk about players. Weisbrod's explanation of improving speed to open up the game for a player's ability to use his hands and head seems obvious, but he seems to articulate himself well no matter what he's talking about.

I actually really liked what Martin said, saying he is the smartest player he has ever played with is pretty high praise.

I liked what Conroy said about him being "engaged". In his last stint he became part of the play, before he looked like a tourist.

That's all I want to see from Nemisz - progress.

I've been watching him progress for three years now and as long as the progress continues, he'll get to the NHL.
