IMO Backlund is a better player than Stepan, but he won't make as much on his next contract.
We really need to keep Backlund - we'd only have one top six centre without him.
He's a player you make room for if you have to. If that means getting rid of somebody like Stone on defence or paying a team to take Brouwer's contract, you do that. He's a key piece to this team.

Backlund isn't going to make more than Monahan. That's the first thing I'd say. There are ten centres with a $6M+ cap smaller than Monahan's. They are MacKinnon, Scheifele, the Nuge, Backes, Duchene, Pavelski, Couture, Forsberg, Plekanec and Jordan Staal.
Backlund's comparables, guys like Filpulla, Frans Nielsen, Dubinsky, Zajac, all have cap hits between $5-5.85M. The AAV will depend on the term, and if it means a 5-year deal, I'd absolutely give him $6M.
Maybe they hoped Bennett/Jankowski could make him expendable, but that's clearly not the case. Backlund is the clear cut 2nd best centre on this team. They should extend him January 1.

I don't think anyone would disagree with that, that Stepan contract is terrible.

Joe Yerdon @JoeYerdon
A bit early for peeking at the scout list, but Flames GM Brad Treliving on the list in Buffalo tonight

I would assume that I'm in the minority on this one, but I've always been in favor of trading for Kane. I don't care if these guys are Boy Scouts - the kid can skate, he can shoot, and he has size. Hes looking for a big payday so he'll be on his best behavior.

E.Kane has looked quite good with Buffalo the last couple of seasons. 20 and 28 goals, and is on pace for 40+ this year with 10 through 19 games so far.

I believe Kane is an upcoming UFA, so that would be crazy.
Brodie is struggling this year, but he still has a lot of value because of his contract and offensive stats.

Besides Kane, there was some rumor a few weeks ago that Buffalo could move Sam Reinhart.

I don't really think the Flames need to make a move up front right now or on the back end.
Ferland is playing great on the top line and the Jankowski line needs more time.
Unless he can dump Brouwer I am not sure there is a move to be made up front?
I would bring Chad Johnson back though

If the Flames could get Reinhart, I think he'd be a solid option for the top 6.

I'd look at him more as a bottom 6 player at this stage. Still though, it'd be a good get depending on acquisition cost (given Buffalo's rumoured shopping list - Fox, Andersson, Kylington could be of interest).
Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Bennett - Jankowski - Jagr
Versteeg - Lazar - Reinhart
...and I dunno, figure out what to do with Brouwer (buy out in the summer), and Stajan (...joins Brouwer in the press-box for the remainder of this season?)

I bet Brad wants to deal for more scoring. Wouldn't mind Kane or Reinhart. Knowing Treliving though he would want the more cost controlled player.
Does buffalo have another Paul Byron lying g around there somewhere?
I also am willing to bet uffalo is looking g for some defense help too since their big gun is out.

Monaghan was a RFA, Backlund is about to be a UFA.
Their contracts aren't really comparable.

Not comparable, but Backlund is not making more than Monahan. At least not with the Flames. If they don't have a deal with him by the deadline they will need to trade him. If that happens hopefully Jankowski is ready for a bigger role next season.

You may well be correct on the amount, but Backlund on the UFA market may well get more than Monny money.
Players get overpaid all the time in UFA land, and it depends on Backlund's season this year.
I'm not so sure that Backlund gets traded if the Flames are on some sort of contention.

If we're acquiring I'd assume Bennett or Janko is heading back that way
Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland
Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik
Reinhart/Bennett-Reinhart/Janko-Jagr
Versteeg-Lazar-Brouwer

Garrioch "rumors":
http://ottawasun.com/sports/hockey/n...mark-of-season
He says the Treliving is looking for a forward for the bottom 6.
Coyotes getting plenty of calls.
Panthers want a winger.
Islanders need to make a decision on de Haan but first priority is Tavares.
Teams involved in the Duchene talks are looking elsewhere but there are a shortage of available forwards. Columbus and Pittsburgh specifically mentioned.
Galchenyuk continues to be on the market. Bergevin is on the hot seat and word is he is the most active GM right now.
Jets are willing to move Armia, Copp, or Matthias depending on return.
Teams are calling about Trouba, but Jets have no interest in that move.

What would be the point of bringing in a forward or two for the bottom 6?
