Derek Morris was a great player and one of the league's best up and comers back in the summer of 2000. Had he not held out until December of that year, we would have made the playoffs for sure. In 2001, much was made about the amount of points per game the Flames collected prior to him coming back and then after. The difference was huge. Morris was in the top five powerplay QBs behind guys like Al McInnis and Bobby Holik.

Like, who is Miika Elomo?

that's such a painful sequence in hindsight.

Giguere --> 2nd rounder --> Elomo + 4th rounder (Szuper)

Elomo and Szuper spent some time in the AHL, but never made it to the NHL. That's a textbook example of breaking a good asset into small enough pieces to completely waste the asset in the end. Sutter was guilty of that too with his draft day trades.

The whole goalie situation before the Kipper trade hurts from today's perspective. Wasting a 1st, a 2nd and a 4th on Krahn, Medvedev and Szuper, trading Giguere for nothing, spending assets on several other goalies ... not good.

Giguere was the last Hartford Whaler to play in the NHL. A 1st round pick, 13th overall in 95.

And for those who think the Jankowski draft pick was “off the board”, the Flames’ 1st round pick of Morris had the so called experts really wondering if the Flames had lost their minds. IIRC, Morris was ranked in the 50s while Jankowski had climbed into the 30s by draft day.
No, I’m not trying to turn this into a Jankowski thread - the point is that Morris was a great first round pick - the Flames made very few good personnel decisions in that era, but this was a good one.

Morris was a bum. He had the talent and natural ability. He just got lazy after the first two years and then the holdout. He realized he could make a good living by being good, but no drive to get better. He was lazy and yeah, put on the weight after the holdout in late 2000 and had little desire out there the rest of that year. He looked ok, but only because the rest of the team was horrible and he looked disinterested at best.

He was rumoured to be on the 2002 Olympic camp too. Button got full value for a guy who could’ve been a superstar if he put in the work required to get better each year. He bounced around on a few teams after, with each team thinking they could motivate him to the next level. He wanted none of what was required to get to the next level.

I was over the moon at the return Button got those days just before that season. Drury was great, but Sutter knew he couldn’t resign him but turned into Warriner as mentioned.

Unequivocally.

Granted you are also correct that we likely would not have made the move for Kipper if we already had Luongo.

But no Morris is a huge positive. Its a tough call.
