Weird it would take this long to remove the interim tag but with costs being cut across the board I think it was wishful thinking they would spend big on a coach.

Hard to discern what Friedman was specifically saying. To me it sounded like Friedman was saying because nothing else has been said by Calgary, that he's assuming that means Ward is staying.
His quote:
"There is no comment from the Flames, but word is beginning to seep out that it's trending towards Geoff Ward returning as the Head Coach of the team for next season. The word is, again with no comment from the team, that it seems to be trending in that direction".

To me given that exact quote, it sounds like Friedman is hearing that it will be Geoff Ward but no one from the team is commenting on it.

Protecting his source...could even be a test balloon to gauge fan reaction (or lack thereof).
From a business standpoint, no reason to do anything until they have to worry about actually selling tickets.
Step 1. Do nothing
Step 2. Do more of #1.
Step 3. See step 2.
Edit:
Step 4. Go on the radio, tell everyone its a long painstaking process.
Step 5. Remind fans we won't do stuff just to do stuff. AKA, we are not gonna do stuff.

Well this would be the dumbest, most disappointing thing they could do.
So, of course they’d do it.
Don’t think I’ve ever had enough of an opinion on a coaching hire to respond with anything but general fan excitement - but if Ward is the head coach, I’m against it and disappointed by it.
