The Back Alley was the first nightclub I ever went to in Calgary. Me and some buddies drove up for the weekend when I was 18. I left the bar hammered, broke from boob shots, ears ringing, with a black eye, and a girl I picked up in the parking lot.

Years later I still fondly remember that weekend. It never was as fun as that night again, but I'll miss the place.

Oh, most revered den of depravity. I couldn't care less about this place now, and yet a small piece of my soul has died off with the arrival of this news (the most useless piece, mind you). As others have said, many hilarious memories here, and I was dissapointed to hear that they'd turned away from rock/metal recently in favour of more mainstream tuneage. Oh well, I'll hump a random woman's leg and punch someone in the temple in the Back Alley's honour, this week.

One of the few remaining bars I've actually been to is now closing down. An interesting 'experience', to be sure. I wonder what sort of "entertainment" venue is going up there next? It's right beside a Hooters...are they just going to call a spade a spade, and put up the lights and poles?

My fondest crack alley memory was the foam party that accidentally had too low of a pH in the bubbles that ended up burning a bunch of people's eyes and skin like it was acid. Thank god I rinsed my face in the sink that night. What a fricken gong show that place was. It was glorious.

Even though I felt like I would get an STI just walking in the door, there was nowhere more fun than the Alley when it was at its best. Trashy, classless and cheap drinks to fuel it all.

Haven't been in almost 8 years but have lots of fond memories of the place. When I was in college we used to go for Ladies night all the time. $1 high balls and free pool until 11pm, then waiting for them to open the curtain to the rest of the bar. Ended up missing plenty of Thursday morning classes due to this ritual.

Now where are ugly fat chicks in too-tight clothing going to dance on tables to Papa Roach's Last Resort?

I actually saw many great concerts there...under age...and for free (5440, Age of Electric, Econoline Crush, The Tea Party, Our Lady peace...when they were still good). This place always seemed to be the most fun on pub crawls too. I do NOT dance but when White Zombie comes on I have no choice but to hit the dance floor. And let's not get started about the ridiculously hot female bartenders.

Haven't lived in Calgary in almost a decade, I had no idea the Alley was even still around! Probably the only bar still around from back then, I don't recognize anything in that city when I visit anymore.

My first memory of the Crack was being 18 in line out front, and seeing at the front of the line some 20-something women who looked like she belonged on the rigs, wearing a blue, lightning bolt bandana and 80's leather coat (this was prob in 2002) making the devil horn fingers and headbanging ridiculously hard to whatever crap they were playing inside.

Given what I later learned of the place, that was a pretty appropriate introduction.

This was one bar I had to be dragged to, kicking and screaming.

Then I had to be dragged out, kicking and screaming.

I never considered it an option when planning a night out, but whenever we ended up there, it was a blast. I am strangely saddened by its demise!

Now I feel like a retired hunter who sheds a tear when his favourite hunting ground is converted into a parking lot. The back alley used to be the best for sportfacks. I remember two of my buddies and myself making a "quickest pickup" bet. All of us went to find each other to claim victory at the same time. We had to use how hot the chicks were as a tiebreaker. I did not win.

Anyone else remember the after hours bar under a 7 eleven somewhere near downtown from about 15 years ago? You had to tell them some kind of secret password and they'd take you down into the basement.
