As has been explained numerous times throughout the ongoing discussion in this thread, it is obvious from the video that Lucic was swinging at a player, and not an official. He takes a swing and actually clips McLeod, and then catches Sharrers cleanly on the follow through. Also notice that he and Sharrers have an exchange immediately, and Lucic's explanation for his actions almost certainly eliminates any appetite for the officials to penalize him.

The NHL had to pin this incident on Wideman, because the alternative is that it's their own fault (through the officials) for failing to protect Wideman from a hit that affected his mental/sensory capacities and allowing play to continue after a blow to the head.
There's no way this shouldn't be decided by an arbitrator when the NHL clearly has incentive to cover its own ass.

I didn't follow the thread and debate about the Webber hit on the same linesman, but watched the clip. Interesting that got nothing and Wideman got 20 games.

No. Both angles I have seen tell the same story.

This has probably been explained 50 times in this thread by now, but that one is different for a couple reasons.
1) Weber is skating much faster and is actually involved in the play.
2) The ref puts himself in Weber's path, where Wideman skated straight at the ref for several seconds without any sudden changes.

What does non roster status mean for trading Wideman? What does it do to his cap hit?

Why do so many people keep bringing up that this might affect a Wideman trade?
Which NHL teams are trading for Wideman with the term and dollars left on his contract?

It means nothing for trading him.
All it does is allow the Flames to remove him the 23 man roster so they don't need to make another roster move (e.g. sending Granlund to the AHL) to stay at the 23 man limit when they activate Ferland.
His cap hit still stays the same.

A real punishment would have been to make Wideman work 20 games as a linesman!

He'd probably do better at that than his attempt at playing defence.

man, that one sailed Wide right over your head.
I don't think anyone involved (except for Wideman) has a problem with this. This is especially true considering he is off the roster for 20 games. I'm sure Flames are OK with it and won't appeal.
They were always going to be stuck with him. He won't waive, and if he did no one wants him. Now they get him off the roster for a bit to see what else they have.
Also, based on his consistently awkward play this year I think his head is not straight for some reason and this incident was the final proof that I needed. During his time off he can get his act together, simplify his game and get focused.

Social media made this suspension, plain and simple.
While at the bank a few minutes ago, I overheard the teller talking to a customer beside me, and they literally said, 'I don't watch hockey, but I saw the video, and I think he should be suspended for at least that long'. That's who the NHL decided to appease with this ruling, people who use twitter but don't watch hockey.
|
Um if social media made this a suspension then Lucic would have gotten suspended as well since there was outrage on social media in his case as well.
These are really poor though arguments by the Wideman defenders.

Actually I was trying to make a play on words with his 20 game suspension. Nothing to do with the poster I quoted other than to continue the game.

This is still the best analysis of the incident IMO. If the other angle that Button shows here had been the one that was all over social media, it would've been a non story. The optics of the first angle (from behind) and the second angle (from the front) are very different.
But as is the information age, people see one little clip and think they have all the information they need to make a sound judgement on the overall situation, like this classifies as one of the worst attacks on an official in NHL history. I'm just disappointed that the NHL felt they had to make an example of Wideman because the bad clip was the one that went viral.
