Johnny Gaudreau likely to sign with Calgary as per Al Morganti
Anybody hear Al Morganti on the FAN 960 morning show this morning? He seems pretty convinced that Johnny Gaudreau will sign with Calgary.
He's done everything he could possibly do in the NCAA so I would absolutely love to see him in the NHL next year, or even be slotted in this year.
What do you guys think? Will he come? Will he stay another year? Will Burke try and trade him?

absolutely nothing left to prove in college. Anything but a Hobey Baker and an ELC from Calgary would be a shock to me.

Burke has always loved guys getting at least a year in the AHL. With his size I don't think there is any chance he's in the NHL next year.

Not a chance. Burke sent Sven down, said he was tiny, things of this nature.

I think he will sign here, but he will play at least 1 year in Abby before he gets a long term shot with the big team.

The fact that this is a rumor shows that the fanbase has put this kid on way too high of a pedestal IMO.

I think he'll get a good shot at the big club but he isn't a cinch to play in Calgary.

No way he'll be here...too small. Burke will deal him for truculence.

Please find a quote where Burke said this. He sent Sven down for his lack of dedication in 3 zone play. It's not like he's been lighting it up in the AHL either.
Burke has gone out of his way to communicate with Gaudreau and tell him there's room on this team for him. He see's the value in smaller players with immense skill, but preaches that they need to be surrounded by truculent players.
He will likely go to the AHL regardless of what Burke thinks as there will only be a few NHL games remaining when Gaudreau is complete his NCAA playoff run. The best thing for him is to thrive in a winning environment with the Heat and help them with hopefully a long playoff run.
Also I wouldn't call this news/rumour as it's just one mans opinion. It's the same opinion that most people who follow Gaudreau have. He's too good for the NCAA and his development will be halted a year if he chooses to go back at this point. If he goes back for his final year than there's basically 0% chance he will sign with the Flames as the only conceivable reason would be to pull a Justin Shultz.

I don't think Gaudreau will have a place saved for him next year on the Flames, but he has a very legitimate shot at earning one.
Gaudreau very well might be ready (or will be for next season). Only one way to find out - camp and exhibition games. We will all have a better idea of how close he really is when he goes to the Heat later this season once the NCAA career is over (and an even better idea if BC unfortunately doesn't make it too far, and Gaudreau gets a couple of games on the Flames).

"Tiny" was a joking reference to Gaudreau not Sven.

Should be an exciting training camp come September 2014. I hope he does sign and I think it would be a surprise if he did return to the NCAA next season. Burke might not like his size but his skill is hard to beat for his age. I guess we will see.
My prediction is he plays 30-40 games for the Flames next season after spending the beginning of the season in the AHL and tearing it up!

Can we just stop using this word please? I am getting really tired of seeing these dumb ass buzz-words being parroted ad nauseam.
Back on topic, I think this is great news and I'd be ecstatic if he got a couple games with the Flames this season.

Being excited about a prospect isn't putting him on a pedestal. I haven't seen a single poster say that JG is even a lock to make the big club next season.

Has he really... I hardly think texting his coach to tell him and Arnold that the Flames still like him constitutes "out of his way".

I honestly beleive that is Gaudreau is ready Burke will keep him here. Burke, want to win, I believe this is what drives him. I also believe that this drive would make Burke happy to be wrong about a fella like Gaudreau.

He went to BC and Providence... I assume he talked to the players there when he was there.

I'm sure he'll get a chance to win a spot out of camp. Even if he does don't be surprised if he gets sent down at some point during the season. Most college players take a year or two to adjust to the grind of an 82 game AHL/NHL season.
