Obviously, 24 games isn't much. And as you say, it is spread out over several seasons.

However, that also works in his favour: he has been good in every playoff series DESPITE the fact that they have been spread out over several seasons.

Also, even though it is only 24 games, it is ALL the games in the post-season. It isn't 24 good ones after 24 bad ones, it is 24 good ones out of 24 total opportunities.

I find the time between those samples to be too difficult to gauge, plus even within that, there is a lot of disparity (15 Canucks he was good, Ducks not so much; 17 Ducks not that impressive and 19 Avs I wasn't as taken as some people by his play). I think this last 4 game sequence was his best showing, though.

Agreed. He gets a bad spin because he hates the media, but he does so with good reason. I’d bet almost anyone who plays for him would take a puck in the face for the guy. He is brutally honest, but he’s one of the best people in the game.

Capfriendly shows around $4.59 million in cap space, and they're losing their $10 million LTIR buffer from Horton and Clarkson which I think allowed them to have this roster in the first place.

Leafs are in bad shape

They really aren’t, they are deep at forward and could easily make a move to redirect that salary into an improvement for the team.

Sure...but that doesn't mean they arent up against the cap.

I mean, right now they have a cap hit of 95+ million. Yes they will gain some space due to attrition and can make deals to lower their hits, but to say they arent up against it....well....its just false.

I don't really see how they can trade any of their big 3 without massive retained salary. They do have a few Nylanders and Kapanens they could trade but that to me seems more like shuffling deck chairs instead of actual improvement.

People clearly have no idea how LTIR works.

That is with only 9 forwards and 6 defence signed for next year. Technically, if they fill out their roster with players making league-minimum, they're not up against the cap.

By any measure that people mean when they say a team is up against the cap, they're up against the cap.

There was no "buffer". The Leafs couldn't add any more actual cap space to their team. They could just add LTIR cap to the team. It had no effect on their actual players playing and the cap space allowed to the Maple Leafs. So the Leafs could go add a bunch of injured players (Clarkson, etc) as a way to gain assets or dump equally crappy contracts. It had no effect on the actual cap the Leafs were playing with.

Well, I’m not saying that. I was responding to someone saying they “are in bad shape”

According to Cap Geek, the Maple Leafs will have $4,591,467 in cap space for the 2020-21 season. The list of 17 players for next season has nine forwards, six defensemen, and two goaltenders. Just under $4.6 million does not leave the Maple Leafs much wiggle room for improvements.

I hate this thread. I keep confusing it with the CBJ vs TBL thread and get confused when it's not about that series.

It's tight for sure. But two of the six dmen you are counting will likely be Marlies to start the season. Their money goes to Dermot and Lilegrin is up so that's 3.5 left for the bottom 3. Spezza hopefully is back at league minimum so that leaves 2.8 million for two more forwards. Robertson will be playing next year at 850k so left with 1.9 million to sign a vet or bring up another young player to fill the gap. It's tight for sure. But doable. No upgrade on D though so if they want to do that will need to trade a forward but not the big 4.
