The Illya Nikolaev and Other Prospects Playing in Russia Thread
Since the KHL season under way, might as well dedicate a thread to the topic.
Illya Nikolaev will start the season in the MHL with Loko Yaroslavl. His first game of the season will be tomorrow at 10:00 am MST.
Spencer Foo is with Kunlun Red Star. They have played three games so far, including one today. Foo has yet to register a point, Kunlun has one 2 of 3 to start the season though.
Pavel Karnaukhov is still playing with CSKA Moskva. He is pointless in two games.

Loko has already played 2 games this season. No points -1 for Nikolayev so far.
Loko also won the Sirius Junior Club World Cup in Sochi back in August where Niko had 1a in 5 games. The tournament featured an AJHL U20 team, NAHL team, Modo's U20 team among others. Loko pretty much dominated the whole tournament.

Will be also interesting to see how much longer Kunlun lasts in the KHL.
They were fined by the KHL in their last game because the gates at the benches and penalty boxes were not working properly during the game. This was in front of a crowd of 800 people in Shanghai.

What kind of ice time are they getting?
Those Euro leagues can be ruthless to young players

I wasn't aware of the precarious financial situation in Kunlun. Would Foo have an Out Clause?

Foo wouldn't necessarily have one, but if the team folds the contracts are voided.

Ilya Nikolayev picked up an assist today in a 6-2 win for Loko. He has 1 point in the last 4 games. Loko has won three of those four.
Foo scored his first KHL goal over the weekend. He has 1 point in 6 games.

Not sure if anyone cares but Karnaukhov got his first goal of the season. 8 games in.

Nikolayev with another goal and assist today. His total is up to 7 points in 8 games ( 4g 3a).
Edit: I spoke too soon. Nikolayev potted and empty netter with 20 seconds to spare. He has 5 goals in 8 games.

Yes he is in the MHL.
MHL is the KHL version of the CHL (QMJHL, OHL, WHL).
The VHL is KHL version of the AHL.

Spencer Foo is having a decent start to his KHL career. Nothing that would suggest the Flames made a mistake, but good enough. He picked up another assist today.
In 13 games he has 3G 2A 5pts.

Nikolayev continues to be a consistent producer. Yesterday he had 1 g 2 A. He is currently a little over a point per game pace.

Few players on his team are also very interesting, notably Gutik and Beryozkin.
Wouldn't mind throwing late round picks on them in next years draft to obtain thier rights.
We need to start dipping into the massive talent base available in Russia.

I know nothing about the MHL. Can someone help me to understand how Nikolaev's numbers are to be assessed in context? I recognise it is a Juniour League, but is it more CHL or Sweden 1st Div.?

I'm not sure exactly how comparable it is to the USHL or CHL except for that player of a similar age play in those league (U20). A large difference is that teams are are subsidiaries or KHL teams. In that sense it is similar to the U20 programs in the SHL. The MHL is barely a decade old, so how exactly it compares is not concrete.
I terms of Nikolaev's production, his point per game pace is matched by 44 other players. Although it's hard to tell because many of the better players get called up to the VHL. That said, he is currently 18th for goals and 33rd for points ( before today).

Ilya Nikolayev just scored his 9th of the year. He has found the back of the net in 4 straight games.
