Replace it with a recording for all I care. Better yet get rid of it entirely. Its not "getting people into the game" and anyone looking bored or disinterested during the anthem is because of the anthem itself not because of who's singing it
Liscano was a treasure!

Touché re every anthem. Although his rendition of twangy, smiling cowboy O Canada (I don’t care how short it is, it’s still too long) is just unbearable for me. I suppose it represents Calgary i just find it so incredibly hokey.

I love the Kate Smith rendition, but political correctness got her cancelled because something she said in the 1930's, because you know, it's relevant to today.

They should just cancel the anthem's, players come from 10 countries (?) now and really have no idea what they are standing for.

SUPER relieved to hear we get another voice this year.
Singers from Canada singing with a southern accent are just ridiculous.

Default George Canyon the New Flames Anthem Singer

Singing the anthems before every game is ridiculous. The US and Canada are the only nations that do this.

Too bad, Canyon is great - one of the best in the league and we were lucky to have him. Hopefully they can find another country singer - Corb Lund would be fantastic but I think he’s an Oilers fan (and probably too busy touring).

Just some quick and sloppy internet research says that the playing of the anthems in the U.S. started during WWI as a way to boost patriotism for the war effort as the war was very unpopular among the American public. It stands to reason that in Europe, this wouldn't be necessary as the war was in their back yard and for most countries, it wasn't a choice to support the war effort.

Then the practice started up during WW2 for the same reason and just kept going after that. It is mentioned that some teams stopped doing the anthem as they thought it cheapened the anthem, but then other teams found that patriotism sells. Teams that played the anthem claimed to be "America's" teams and were able to attract larger fanbases that extended past their immediate geographical area. So eventually, the other teams just kept doing the anthem too.

For Canada, I couldn't find any specific information. I suspect it is just a copy cat of the American practice.

For international games yes. I've been to club and franchise rugby games here in NZ and they didn't play the anthem for those.

Do the teams at least do the haka against one another?

A hakathon?

Sometimes, yes. At the lower levels it can get pretty heated.

I find all of the Flames singers past and present to be nothing to rave about. Certainly not any better than the other ones across the league. They arent horrible, but nothing special about any of them. This includes Smith, Liscano and even Canyon. At least he sings it fast so as to get it over with. I am like many others in that I would rather see all national anthems exterminated from sporting events, unless one wins a gold medal representing their nation. Even with that I dont care to hear it.

To each their own, I guess, but one of the best? I would say far from it. His rendition is nothing special, and the organ accompaniment is straight out of the 80's. Even if you are looking for something straightforward rather than someone using the opportunity to audition for a record contract, as others have said, his phony twang is really quite... bad. In my opinion, of course.

I hate when they make a spectacle out of it, but I definitely don't dislike the anthems for the anthems.

Hell, I think I'd be in another room for 90% of the puck drops if it weren't for the anthems

I like yelling "C" and "RED" but I suppose I can do that whenever I wanted.

No, that’s legitimately cool. But ultimately I think these sorts of pageants surrounding the anthems is further proof of how boring and pointless their performance is before every hockey game. At what point has the ritual run its course?

• Sing the anthems at the home opener and closer.
• Sing the anthems in the first home game for each team in each playoff round.

^ I don't know why, but all of us gathering to our seats and waiting for puck drop seems a bit strange to me?
The lights go down, we're all excited as the players come out and skate around with loud music, Beesley is hyping us all up... then the lights come up and they just go to center ice and drop it? Definitely efficient and makes sense but seems a bit off in some way.

I think the 'opening act' is always a bit necessary - and for sports, it's the anthems I guess?

I know that Americans would care, but I would be curious to know how many Canadians would be upset if they never sang the anthem.

Oh I'm sure it would open a can of worms. People would balk at the loss of tradition, some would claim anti-patriotism, politicians would stick their noses in etc.

Those that are fine with it wouldn't say anything so the squeaky wheels would get all the grease.
