So... a guy at GlobalFest was telling me that the smaller your aperture, the sharper your fireworks pics will be (he recommended f/20-f/22). Everything I've ever read about lenses says there's a sweet spot for sharpness and once you pass that point you lose sharpness due to diffraction, so I use an ND filter to keep my aperture from getting too small without blowing out the highlights too much. I know the ND can affect sharpness too, but mine is B+W so it should be pretty good quality. Am I right, or should I take the ND off and stop down?

I don't know what body/lens combination you are using; but, regardless, you should not need an ND filter for shooting fireworks at all. In general, they are used to reduce light and, if anything, they can add more blur to some parts of the final image, which is not what you need in fireworks. As for aperture: 8-11 is a good and sharp enough range, normally, from my experience and you can work with decent exposure ranges when shooting at night. However; if you choose to work with small apertures, diffraction influence would be negligible in case of fireworks, because most of your frame (field of view) is black anyway.

Why would a black frame make diffraction negligible? Wouldn't the colour would diffract onto the black, making the fireworks look fuzzier? As for aperture, f/8-f/11 tends to clip the colours IMO. The reds in particular tend to shift yellow.

Unsolicited CC is not that big of a faux pas (though some people don't like it), but taking someone's photo and editing it (without asking first) is a bigger deal (because you're violating copyright).

I never would have considered it gauche to edit someone's photo. I post in a photography forum where it's done all the time, but I can see where some might not appreciate it.
I won't argue the copyright argument. I'll just say, nice avatar.

A photography forum is a slightly different context. Personally, I'm one of those people who would always welcome CC (though, if you want to actually edit it, I'd like you to ask first) but for others it's a fine line between helping and discouraging/disparaging.
Yes, my avatar is a copyright violation too (and I re-sized/cropped it). It's not a copyright violation that could be perceived as an "I'm better than you" post though.

I was going to drop this because I admitted wrongdoing and apologized, and derailing threads like this sucks, but now I wish I hadn't edited my post. I don't want InSutterWeTrust to get the impression that I think I'm better than him. I was quite clear that the change I made to his photo made it more pleasing to my eye, and nothing more.
Most people in this thread are better photographers than I am, and although I haven't shot anything lately that I can share, I will soon to make that obvious.
And I do want to see more of his shots. I love seeing the beauty of SF.

If it helps, I don't believe that was your intent either.
Perhaps we would all be best served if we had a CC-thread and a non-CC thread, or just get into the habit of posting "CC welcome" if it is.

Looking again, I agree with you, but I can't tell if its shadows or makeup darkening around the eyes. Either Way, I think a softening filter would do wonders for that photo.
