You'd think so, ER, but Ottawa and Borowiecki have seemingly parted ways:

I genuinely am so interested to see what Ottawa does in free agency with all that room to play with. They are truly the most unpredictable team in the NHL.

Ain't that the truth.

I would like to say they are mavericks, but nothing they do makes any sense, so I am left thinking they are just inept.

I look forward to seeing Ottawa give Wayne Simmonds a two-year, $14 million deal on October 9.

If Ottawa’s owner was willing to spend money than looking at overpaid veterans with one year left with assets attached should be the game plan.

Similar to the trade Detroit made for Marc Staal this weekend getting a 2nd in return.

Backes, Steen, Bozak, Dubinsky, Russell, Sutter, Baertschi, Perreault, Brendan Smith , Zajac...with a quick glance those are some of the names that come to mind.

^ A few of those are higher cap hit than real cash, so more appealing to Melnyk. Bonus if the player is good enough to fetch an additional return 50% retained at the TDL.

They need 13 players and about $24M to reach the floor, so they have to spend some money one way or another.

What’s the punishment for not reaching the cap floor?

There is no defined punishment. Teams have to be above the cap floor by the time the season starts. Period.

Same with being above the ceiling. Teams have to be below the ceiling by the time the season starts. Period.

^ that makes sense, or else some teams would take the punishment for going above or below it if it made sense.

Imagine in a parallel universe, Ottawa selling the vision and bringing in Taylor Hall, Alex Pietrangelo, TJ Brodie, and Jacob Markstrom.

Those players along with the youth and draft picks will completely turn that franchise around.. of course this won't happen tho

Hanifin and Ekblad are good players to contrast their respective discussions. On one hand, some Calgary fans are adamant that Hanifin still has years left to develop since he's only 23, but somehow, Ekblad, who's the same age, is who he is.

It's highly unusual for a player, especially a defenseman, to be ready to be an impact player before the age of 21. Ekblad is the outlier, not the rule.

Edit : I may have misread that. If you meant that Ekblad has even more room to grow, I would agree. He has the ability to follow the Hedman mold.

Hedman was one of the best defensemen on earth by his 5th season (22 years old). Ekblad, 24, is no where near that level and never will be.

I also doubt Hanifin gets to that level.
Hardly anyone does. No defenseman in the entire league has had the career that Hedman has. Maybe Keith, but I don't even think he deserved the two Norris trophies. Doughty's peak didn't last as long. Josi took way longer to develop.

I think if Tkachuk and Monahan were offered, the Sabres would listen and I’d probably do that for Eichel.

I don’t think Buffalo would want Gaudreau for Eichel.

I think the Sabres would want Gaudreau only if they were keeping Eichel, which bodes well for a good futures return for the Flames, like 8th overall and Cozens.

If you are below the cap floor you don't qualify for revenue sharing was my understanding.

Tkachuk is probably one of the only pieces I’d say is untouchable.
I agree though, Buffalo would take that trade in a heartbeat.

I’ve never really understood why anybody would ever be untouchable. It’s all assets and asset management. If the price is right I’m sure it’d make sense to move Tkachuk.

Ottawa should have a lot of good ammo in place to rebuild the team quickly and be really good. But the owner is going to get in the way there and stop that.

I really don’t want to see Johnny moved in a “hockey trade”.

If he gets traded, do it for picks. Build the team through the draft. I can’t foresee a deal where we improve our team by trading Johnny for other parts. Not in the short term, not in the long term. Keep him, extend him, keep building around him or trade him for draft picks.

...I feel like come October 10th, I’m going to be super disappointed with this team.
