I agree but his game would probably suffer as a 4th line player plus I think in the NHL he’s probably more suited as a center and between a couple of players with size.

I don’t think we’ll see him this year unless there’s an injury to a top 9 player.

It's exciting to see these guys doing good things in the AHL. Hoping we can see some jumps up soon. Thanks for posting the updates and videos. It is much appreciated.

Phillips is fun to watch. No doubt. Now, the big question. Who do you take out of the lineup for Phillips? Where does he fit in the lineup?

I'm sure he can handles Josh Leivo's level of contribution.

Can you imagine the crazy skill of a Gaudreau-Monahan-Phillips line?

I don't care if it's two small guys with a bigger guy. I've seen it work on Blades of Steel.

I say:

Tkachuk - Lindholm - Dube
Gaudreau - Monahan - Phillips
Lucic - Backlund - Mangiapane
Leivo - Ryan - Ritchie

Give that a try. If need be, swap Phillips and Leivo.

What was the line that Gaudreau played on with Joe Colborne? Timbits and something?

No Bennett, Nordstrom or Simon.

Edgy.

So Zary with a point per game so far start his AHL career.

Is he just a passenger with those white hot line mates of his, or is he holding his own?

He has looked fine from the bits that I have seen. But having said that, Phillips is so dynamic I imagine that he could make nearly every player on that roster appwR useful.

Certainly not a passenger, rather a player with potential. NHL potential?

Could be, but too early to know.

It's a shame they'll be forced to send Zary down to play meaningless games in a league he's already played multiple years in. If he was going back to a contender with hopes of a long playoff run that might be different, but the WHL is basically a 20 something game exhibition season this year, with no fans. Most teams want to play their young players anyways.

If he's showing he belongs at the AHL level, that is where he should stay IMO.

There is room for Phillips right now. Tons of options on the RW up and down the lineup.
You want to ice the best team possible? You should probably call him up ASAP.
Even on the 4th line he can still do work since Ryan is back.

Zary has been excellent, not a passenger at all. He sees the ice very well and plays with good pace. He's a great playmaker in his own right.

It's early, but the top 4 scoring Heat forwards are:

21
22
19
21

...years old.

I'm pretty sure he can't, or he'd be in the NHL already. Leivo's role is to play the physical game and retrieve pucks. His role is not to be pretty or make slick plays. His job is to get pucks to the skill players, make room, and wreak some havoc in front of the net. I don't see a 5'7, 150 pound player doing that.

As timbit has pointed out, the jump from the AHL to the NHL is quite significant. When you're getting a chance to make the jump from the AHL to the NHL its because you are the best player on your team. But you are making the jump to a league where every player was the best player on their team. You are now competing against guys that are all as good or better than you, and all of them are bigger and faster than anyone you've played against. So the advantage you have at the one level does not automatically translate to the next. You may be able to water bug it at the AHL level, but that does not mean it will translate the NHL level.

It's an interesting mix, but I honestly believe that second line gets its head caved in. Seriously, who retrieves pucks in that scenario? You want to stop that line dead in its tracks, trap at the blueline and make them dump and chase. Monahan then has to win the puck battles and you take away his greatest strength of being a sniper. You just can't play two guys that small together in the NHL as they will get neutralized by size. They'll spend the whole game without or chasing the puck, or blowing snow just inside the blueline. If Phillips is the answer, then the question is who do you call up after you trade away Gaudreau?

That's not really fair because training camp was highly abbreviated this year, so rookies never really had a shot to make the club and we had a bunch of fresh new UFA borderline NHLers to test out
