Default Leafs 4 Flames 3

Game Takes: Leafs 4 Flames 3

- terrible start
- good rebound
- still like the Monahan/Gaudreau rebound
- probably deserved better

In the fancy stats area I came across HockeyStatsCards that give an individual Stats break down of each game.

For this last game they had Gaudreau, Hanifin and Monahan as Great and had Backlund, Lievo, Bennett and Nesterov as Bad.

They had Gio as Fine. Over the year he has had 1 Great game 2 fines and 2 bads. Last year in the complete year they have him with 4 bad games.

Overall they have his average as the Flames worst D-man

Hannifin 1.15
Tanev 1.00
Valimaki .27
Andersson .17
Nesterov -0.0
Gio - .15

Last year Gio led the Flames D with a .65 average

and the Norris year with 1.16... which was the best for any D-man

Small sample size but is Gio falling off?

Do you see Hanifin as breaking out into a top d-man?

The only Flame making their top 10 lists is Nordstom. He ranks as the 3rd worst skater in the league

I find the fancy stats often do not align at all with observation. However, everything you have posted there matches pretty much exactly with my perceptions.

You made a comment about Rittich being a lower tier starter, which should bode well for being a backup.

I知 actually curious about that and whether Rittich has the mentality to be a backup. Spot starts, always be ready etc. Guess I知 a little turned off by the reports that he wasn稚 practicing well in the bubble. Not a good quality for a backup.

Obviously no way to make a determination until he starts playing a little so I知 interested in seeing how it plays out.

Not much to argue there, and because you're using actual performance measures and not +/- or penalty minutes or simply points it matches the eye test.

The Giordano/Andersson pairing is a concern. The question is who is driving that?

In the ten game playoff in August the Flames had some pretty poor numbers by the time they took their beating from Dallas, but some were worse than others.

Andersson was last of the 6th defenders with an xGF% of 43%. Giordano was 2nd to Gustafsson.

To start this season as a pairing they've been pretty terrible at 42%, but getting better.

Giordano was 75% in the second game against Vancouver, and 53% in the last game against Toronto. Andersson 65% and 60%

I'd have to watch them closely to get an eye on if one guy is pulling the other guy down, or if it's a pairing that is just working out kinks.

It might help that it's a contract year and he's a UFA as well.

Will have to do well with what he gets or have a tougher time finding a job.
