Places like that need to stay open to make this hobby sustainable!

I bought my kit from Amazon pre-covid I believe.

Finally got around to making it.

If mildly successful I certainly will look local for the next one.

I moved to brewfather 2 years ago from beerSmith and never looked back! Much better interface, accessible from anywhere, integrates with tilt and plaato, much nicer to work with. Worth the $20 per year. I used beerSmith for years before but it just never got better

He will assemble your kit based on your recipe and curbside pickup too!

He also loaned us the capper, on top of the very convenient curbside pickup.

No, it goes in the last 5 minutes of the boil. If you are trying to fix a batch, you could look up cold crashing. I've never tried it.

Is this bottle conditioned? Are you sure it's not just chill haze?

* for cider *

Yes and maybe, I noticed a couple of really clear bottles, and some cloudy.

Maybe it isn't so bad. This is in the bottle and in a glass. I used gelatin in the carboy and it had cleaned up a good amount of the haze, but some still lingered

I used Cooper's tablets in the bottles.

Ciders will have a fair amount of proteins in them, just like fruiting beers makes them more cloudy. I would suspect it's just a character of the cider. It's hard to compare some things to commercial ciders which will have been filtered or centrifuged. I had a clear cider but I force carbed it and that made all the difference. That secondary fermentation will create haze. Also, park those bottles in the fridge for a couple months and let the sediment really solidify on the bottom and you will likely find it will be clear. It might just be too young.

Out of curiousity, what did you use for yeast

I used EC-1118 for it, but I think next time I’ll go with something less aggressive.

Should clear but you're right it is aggressive, it likely just needs some time!

The airlock is burping about every 20 seconds now.

What is the standard to wait before you bottle with priming sugar.

Instructions say 1 week or so.

Other references say when the bubbles are a minute or more apart.

Thoughts ?

As well...some of the mash mixed in with the beer before I added it to the carboy.

How do I clear up the cloudiness before bottling ?

Thanks.

The mash should settle. When you rack it back to the bucket just be really careful not to stir it up. I've always been a fan of waiting far longer than the instructions say, I find the beer is always better when not rushed. 2-3 weeks is not at all unusual for me, though with gluten free I go even longer, as it is stubborn.

Time. If you're not going to use any other clarifying agents all you can do is time. And time to bottling is really dependant on the style. If it's an IPA the fresher the better, and do so immediately after the dry hopping period (if any) is done. If it's a porter, stout, brown, those can sit longer. Keep in mind if you're using anything except a sealed vessel you're running the risk of oxidization which will make your beer turn faster. You should be ok as long as you don't disturb the bung or airlock and keep it in the dark/cool

Its a Honey Brown Ale.

Still sealed in the glass carboy...

Burps are about 60 - 70 seconds apart now.

Dumb question but Ill ask anyway...

Do you rinse after sanitizing the bottles ?

I was planning to use 2 oz plain bleach and 5 gallons of water.
Soak for 30 minutes (As per a Good eats Episode I have recorded) I like Alton Brown...

Then drain into the bucket again with the liquid priming sugar mixture.

Bottle, close/cap and wait 2 weeks at least before trying one...

If you are using bleach than I would rinse them good. I usually use starsan which you don't need to rinse off and works the best of any food grade sanitizer out there.

Ya, starsan is the way to go. I do a rinse, but I hear it isn't necessary. I have one of those goose necks that go on the sink faucet, so rinsing is really easy anyway. I also use a bottle washer to apply the starsan. So I setup bottles on the left, starsan wash, then to the goosneck, then the other side of the sink, dunking the caps in starsan and rinse water as I go. I can process 100 bottles in about 45 minutes. Then I cap them (flip top) and have a clean supply ready to go. Often there is some rinse water left, so I dump that as I open them for bottling. Never yet had a bad bottle with this method.

To add to above, buy starsan and no rinse needed. I transfer into kegs on-top of the starsan foam, don't fear the foam! Starsan breaks down to a yeast nutrient basically, it doesn't affect the beer in the least. When Indo closed transfers I push a keg of star San out until it's empty and just fill, don't even look inside.

Don't use bleach. Go buy some Star-san. No need to rinse it out.

Guys, where do you make your beer?

I've only done a few batches and I did it in the kitchen to try to keep everything sanitized. It's a pain in the butt to transport carboys the basement for fermenting.

Do you guys have a propane burner you use in the garage? Basement? Where do you get your water?
