It is good to see Canadian university players getting a chance/signing with NHL teams. Might probably start to attract more local talent to go to Canadian universities instead of NCAA.

That will give at least two U of A alumni on the team.
Not that I know if he is ready, but would he be eligible for the playoffs this season?

HockeyDB pic shows him in a Flyers sweater. Can't find any info on him ever being originally drafted by Philly?

Philp went to the Flyers' development camp in 2015. Also, it makes sense that he'd play for Philpadelphia.

Looking forward to the many misspellings of his name to come.

He was injured at nationals last week. Likely won’t play in the playoffs if eligible.

Do you mean the NHL or the AHL playoffs? I am thinking if his injury heals in time, the Flames might want to have him join the Heat for the AHL playoffs? However, I don't know if they can do that. Would someone with better knowledge of the rules tell me what the Flames can do?

It will most-likely be an ELC that starts next season. Depending on the extent of his injury, he could play out the rest of the season in Stockton on a "tryout" agreement.

good for him! Would have been brutal if that injury had cost him the chance to get an ELC.
can never have enough right-handed centermen in the system. Curious how he'll do at the AHL level.

To me, this is an interesting player.
-In his 17 year old and 18 year old WHL seasons, he scored 77 and 82 points in 71 games each year. That's not bad. He was also over a point a game the following year.
-The past two years he has scored 40 points in 28 games and 45 points in 25 games.
His points per game this past year at the UofA was better than Derek Ryan's points per game at the UofA in his comparable season according to Darren Haynes. https://twitter.com/DarrenWHaynes/st...76807549583360
Therefore, I see this as a free asset that will probably never make it at the NHL level, but who just might, and who cares either way? Its a way of adding quality depth to the organization for free.

Maybe we can trade for Phil Kessel too and then promote Matthew Phillips and put them on a line with Luke Philp.

A free asset and helps restock the prospect ranks. It looks like he’s been better statistically than Ryan his whole career at the same age so far, and Ryan is a very valuable roster player. Hope he doesn’t take as long as Ryan...

I'm curious to know a bit more about this guy. he is (as best I can tell) the exact same age as his jr teammate Reinhart and so would have been in the same 14 draft...(Valiev also on that team)
I assume he received at least some attention in that draft as PPG draft eligible players aren't fully a dime a dozen (although as a November birthday would be in the older grouping of that draft year)
the answers are usually size , skating or both- can I assume that is why he wasn't drafted by someone? did he play with Reinhart and therefore was just viewed as leeching off him? other?
(to be clear I have no expectations of him, nor am I thinking this is some sort of post-draft steal, just trying to figure out what his deficiencies were back in the day)

Based on Treliving's comments about Philp getting stronger, I'm guessing the issue in his draft year was size. Personally, I think the best way to find diamonds in the rough almost always seems to be to sign undersized and undervalued players that score a lot.

Would be the second player from the Bow Valley Timberwolves Bantam AA alumni to make it to the Flames...
