Best free VPN or, if not free, inexpensive quality VPN for the price?
hi all,
looking at VPN options, not afraid of paying for it if need be
having trouble separating the wheat from the chaff with reviews, etc. gets conflicting and confusing.
who are you using, and why?

Express VPN. Its been seamless and works perfectly. Has a Firefox and Chrome add-on to connect thru your browser as well. $8.5 bucks a month on a year deal.

I use Private Internet Access, but that is only because it was recommended to me by a friend.
Does what I need it to do though, so I have no complaints.

Also use PIA, it's $40/year and well worth it.

I bought a heavily discounted lifetime membership to Ivacy from StackSocial, and it has been good for me so far.
If you're into comparing/research, check out 'thatoneprivacysite.net'

Another vouch for PIA, I've used it for years and $40 annual cost is nothing. It's also one of the few that come with a proxy included, so you can setup certain applications to run through the VPN without changing your entire connection

PIA is the best one I've ever used. Don't use VPN Unlimited. Terrible VPN. I thought I was smarter then everyone by switching over to it from PIA last year, but I regret that decision everytime I have to use it.
Stick with PIA.

What are you guys using PIA on? Cell? Laptop? Desktop?
When it works, it works great. Issue I have is this. On my MS Surface, it's set to start when Windows loads. Problem I have is I fire up windows and then several minutes after it's up and running I start getting notifications that it's trying to connect. Also seem to randomly disconnect and then re-attempt.
Works pretty good on my phone but murders my battery overnight. And with frequent changes between cell data and WIFI, at times it doesn't properly re-connect unless I open the app, swipe to disconnect and then reconnect. Every time I notice webpages or apps taking too long to load content, I can see data has stopped moving around in the PIA notification bar on my phone.
I want to use it more (especially on holidays) but seems to create a lot of connectivity issues for me.

I just turn it on when needed so I've never had the connectivity problems.

Use it on my tablet, phone and desktop.
The last few weeks I've actually gotten two notices from Shaw because it dropped off while I was seeding some (totally legal) torrents.
That annoyed me, and then I discovered the kill switch.
Is there a way to set up either PIA or a torrent program to only work while PIA Is active?

Short answer - yes.
Longer answer, might be tricky depending on the OS and the program, I've got all my "questionable" activities bound to a VPN interface using a slick combination of docker apps on linux, and no worries about those pesky emails from the ISP.

Most torrent programs allow binding to a particular adapter but it is 100% secure if the VPN client also supports secure IP bind. Don't forget to also change your DNS servers to something other than your ISP. Not sure what I'm using currently would have to check.
When VPN'd go here and do the test if you see your ISP listed then it is possible to still trace traffic back to you.

If you are just using it for torrents try a seedbox. I use ultraseedbox https://www.ultraseedbox.com/

FYI, Netflix is aware of most VPN services and will block access attempts from them, so you can't use it to watch non-Canadian Netflix stuff

Mutually exclusive terms. If a VPN is free, then you are the product and all of your internet traffic metadata is going somewhere
