Default Pitts jumps a couple more times into the 1st round

Pitsburgh made 2 deals this afternoon:

The first was with Dallas, regaining the #19 pick for

Bobby Brink ECHL, 2nd #42 and Jason Robertson ECHL

In the second deal we dealt with Montreal and gained the #12 pick in the draft for

1. Gallagher, Brendan (RW) NHL
2. Mitchell, Ian (D) ECHL
3.Thomson, Lassi (D) ECHL
4. 2nd rd Pick #35

Hated to give up a few guys, but needed the room in the ECHL.

Woah...not sure I'm following the logic on these ones.

Lassi Thomson was the 2019 19th overall pick.

So you moved the 2019 19th overall pick, Brendan Gallagher, and the 35th overall pick for the 12th overall pick.

And same thing with the other trade.

You move up 23 spots to go from 42 to 19 but you gave up:

Bobby Brink: 2019 #34 overall, a guy who had a great freshman season in the NCAA and in a re-draft probably goes round 1 in 2019

Jason Robertson: 2017 #39 overall, had a really good rookie season in the AHL.

Both of those seem like you paid crazy prices to move up 23 spots. The picks Pittsburgh got are great, but I just don't think the value matches up.

(Side note...I'm enjoying my new gig as the Former GM talking head for TSN/Sportsnet, now I know what it feels like when a GM gets fired in real life )

After acquiring the # 1 pick as well as a few of the follow up deals we were left with a couple holes that needed to be filled.

We needed some young D in the pipeline and we needed a 2nd line RW.

This deal gives us both. I drafted Mitchell and Thomson into the CPHL. Mitchell is a guy I wanted because he has developed nicely. I expect him to make the Hawks or not this upcoming season then the next one. Thomson has a booming shot and could turn into a solid blue liner down the line.

Gallagher fills the 2nd line RW role and gives us by far the most annoying 2nd line in the CPHL. Tkachuk-Domi-Gallagher will not be fun to play against.

We like the 35 pick as well as it is an interesting position . to pick from

This off-season is the strangest one since I’ve joined the league.

Just as you think you have a handle on value things change. And the strangest thing is the deals being made around the league are all so different value wise.

I don’t know, it’s followed the same script as every other season pre-draft. I think it’s just a matter of a couple strong GM’ shifting teams and a couple others returning home has just all come together.

It’s been the same end result.

Honestly I think part of is it’s more relaxed to come here casually and not worry about a roster.

My work has been pretty crazy over the couple months and it made it hard to find the time to really commit to a team. Especially when it felt like others were really ramping up the time spent here and much more engaged than I was able to be.

But much easier to drop in just to see what trades are happening and not feel guilty about being a bit delinquent with the roster.
