I love it when people talk of solutions like this as if they're the easiest thing in the world. 'CT should just build an underground line in downtown'. Yeah, nbd, right?

Even though the building foundations on 8th would accommodate and a subway would be great, but no one is going to want to pay the hundreds of millions it would cost to do so. Especially after all the upgrades to current stations to fit 4 car trains.

The current stations will all remain in use by the NE-W line.

I was on the train behind the one that got hit. We were motionless for 30-35 minutes at least, stuck between stations, and it was completely packed inside. At one point a women forced her way to the door and opened the emergency exit to jump out because she had to pee really badly.
Probably the worst train ride I've been on, comfort-wise. People kept cramming themselves onto the train since it was one of the first one to go south in a long time. Totally packed until at least Anderson.

I used to be against crossing arms (or other barriers) downtown because I saw it as unnecessarily protecting those that can't handle a simple red light. But the delays caused by drivers (and pedestrians) that ignore the signals seems to be worse now than ever.
The number of people that reply on the train will keep increasing, and drivers aren't going to suddenly get better or more attentive. While I hate the idea of dumbing something down to the lowest common denominator, thousands of people shouldn't have to pay (with their time) for one person's mistake, over and over again.
Edit: And while I'm sure that insurance covers some of the "real" costs associated with a car vs. train collision, I wonder if extra labour, fuel, etc. for shuttle buses gets included, in addition to any physical damage to the trains.

Are those folks who want the C-train grade separated ready to pay the massive property tax hike that will come with that project? I doubt it....

Capital projects don't affect property tax rates.

I never commented on how difficult or expensive it will be. I was responding to this statement: "In this case it's certainly not Transit's fault this happened."
Personally I wouldn't mind higher property taxes to pay for these projects.
Mostly I wish the Province would spend more on public transit projects, they are quite old school in their transportation spending if you ask me. Edmonton and Calgary should be receiving way more funding from the Province for public transit projects.

They should have timed tasers across the walking path that turn on 10 seconds before a train comes.

If "massive property tax hike" = "cut the sprawl subsidies" then I'm all for it. Could've also improved the LRT instead of building the ring road, but that ship has sailed.

What was the incident this morning(Friday) ? I talked to some people that were on inbound trains in the NW for over a 90 minute delay. It sounds like a Porsche Cayenne crashed into the train downtown.

Actually, I'm disappointed I didn't make my post a year ago. I missed your taser idea originally.
But if I were a wizard, I'd probably be manning an intersection throwing fireballs at those people.

I drove past it en route to downtown, but after the fact. Not sure what happened, it looked from the way the car's front end was crushed in like it crashed in to the train, but CBC says the train hit the car. Dunno.

Lots of flashing lights at Sunnyside. Not sure if trains are getting through.

I heard the blast of the CP train as it approached Southland drive and then saw the train come to a pretty quick stop. Confirmed on twitter that someone was hit by the train and is amazingly not dead (yet). Nowhere near a crossing.
