This might be the worst RFA deal I've ever seen.
I do like Wilson though, he's a real solid player, just maybe more of a 4x3.5-4 than a 6x5+ guy.

I know he was a force in the playoffs but this seems like a disaster contract in the making. Be fun to revisit this thread in 2 years. Imagine if we gave this to Ferland after the Vancouver series?
Edit: I didn't even take RFA years into account, what a horrible contract good god.

What's even funnier is that they lowballed Trotz, bizarre.

This is the typical stupidity of sports team owners. It's the only industry I know of where people think it's good business to pay managers much lower salaries than the people they are managing.
Remember Craig Button? He got the GM job here because he was willing to work for less than any experienced candidate – something like $400,000 a year, if I recall correctly. For double the money, the Flames could have got a qualified GM, but they would not pungle.
So Button picked up Igor Kravchuk off waivers when nobody else would touch that toxic contract ($2.5 million a year for a third-pairing defenceman when the average team payroll was $33 million). That put the team way over budget, and when he could find no taker for Kravchuk, he had to waive Phil Housley to balance the books. Yup, Housley for Kravchuk… now that's an even trade.
With that one move, Button wasted enough of the owners' money to have paid a capable GM for the entire three seasons he worked for the team. But owners still think it's smart to overpay players and underpay managers.

I really like Tom Wilson other than some of the garbage hits, he’s a great player and draws a lot of attention.
That contract though is way too expensive, wow.

Big Tom Wilson fan. Wouldn’t have given him much more than $3.5m/year.
Holy crap that is a bad deal. Like, I can’t believe an actual GM would get fleeced that hard bad.

Good for Tom Wilson! Get that money wherever you can. Grossly excessive in both pay and term but as they say in car sales, there is an ass for every seat!

A tad high, but Wilson does a lot of things well and is entering his prime. When he was suspended in the playoffs , the Caps were scrambling to find a first line replacement. He really complements their skill guys and brings a different dimension, I can see why they did this

I don't get all the complaints about the cap hit. If they need cap space in the futurr, they'll just pull another Brooks Orpik. $5million cap hit reduced to $1million. Problem solved.

Everything about him screams career year, going from a 11 shooting percentage to more then 14, from a 30 fo to 46. doubling his next highest year in goals and a major jump in assists.
With a player like Wilson you want to keep him hungry. He won a cup, he just signed a huge contract with massive length.
Everything really screams regression and frustration.
