It's EA's digital distrubution service. EA is trying to cash in on STEAM's success and that's where some of the anger comes from. Upon launching it, EA pulled all of there big titles from STEAM (including games that had just been released like Dragon Age 2). It's clunky and a step backwards imo. You can get it for free from EA's website.

Except they don't do the things that make people like Steam: sales (well, that's love-hate), bundles, and give-aways... at least not nearly as well.

Its like Steam, except everything Steam does well, Origin does badly. Also, everything Steam does badly, Origin also does badly. No achievements, silly BF3 launching mechanism, no sales, messed up chat/friending system, terrible selection, etc, etc...

Oh exactly. The only reason Origin is installed on my machine is because it's the only way I can play BF3 and man is that a chore. It's like going back 10 years in terms of server selection. The UI is absolutely horrid and having to sign into multiple services doesn't help either. I pretty much abandoned the "party system" from the get go because it didn't work. Do they even have a voice chat system for Origin? I wouldn't know because my buddies and I just set up chat through Steam lol.

This will either be the greatest game ever released, or the biggest disappointment since Star Wars: The Phantom Menace 3D.
(seriously hoping for a Mac release...)

I'm almost hesitant to get excited. I just want to leave my fond memories alone.
I must have spent a year of my life playing Sim City, 2000 and especially 3000. When Sim City 4 was announced, I was pumped and counted the days. But when I picked it up, I just couldn't get into it and thoroughly enjoy it. Way too complicated to play casually.
Still, I like the looks of this new one.

the only benefit i got out of Sim City 4 was that it made me want to fire up 3000 again. i want to build cities, not be a transportation manager

My face is a bum!

I want to be a transportation manager who also builds cities. I'm already dreaming of building one city with regions dedicated to low density residential, one massive core of dense commercial encircled in pedestrian discouraging raised freeways with massive interchanges connecting to my 3 ring roads... it will be glorious! Then one with mixed use neighbourhoods all over and tiny roads with the worlds most complex and awesome subway system.

Sim tower was a classic. There is a iphone app for it that wasted a few too many hours.

I think it would be very cool to link 16 cities together and watch the people moving from city to city based on different design philosophies.
Maybe you concentrate too much on pretty parks and open spaces and your employment goes to crap, but your buddy builds a huge pollution generating industrial manaufacturing based city, but his crime is high and another buddy focuses on city safety but you have to drive everywhere, and yet another buddy builds a city with a very cool mass transit city.
Maybe you should be able to pay for another city to advertise the advantages of moving to your town.
"Come to scumville free hookers and blow for all"
being able to build multiplayer has some great possibilities, maybe you overbuild reactors or water pumps so you can sell your excess to another city, or maybe another city is willing to take your trash.
Maybe you focus on sports stadiums and bars and become the first city in your "country" to attract a NHL or NFL team.
Or maybe you subvertly encourage a riot in your neighbours city so that people will move to your version of Vegas.

So...you're saying you want to play Farmville?
It would be awesome if they could design a game that would please both the casual and hardcore city builders out there. Personally, I love the complexity, but understand that others may not. I am actually concerned that it may be too simple because casual games seem to sell way better than complex ones.

it would be nice if they could just make certain things optional. i hate micromanaging stuff in video games, part of the reason why i'm terrible at RTS's. let me build my city, but have the ability to let the game auto manage traffic and civic stuff

I want corrupt mafia based construction companies.
I want public opinion based on unique structures that I choose to build.
I want a bid process damnit.
And I want a bear skin rub and a rock throne in the mayors office.
