Default Ongoing important Science news thread

Figured I'd try this out, a thread anyone can update with big news from the Scientific community.

Start with a few:

Evolution In Action: Native U.S. Lizards Are Adapting To Escape Attacks By Fire Ants
link: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases...0121123041.htm

Quote:
Quote:
Penn State Assistant Professor of Biology Tracy Langkilde has shown that native fence lizards in the southeastern United States are adapting to potentially fatal invasive fire-ant attacks by developing behaviors that enable them to escape from the ants, as well as by developing longer hind legs, which can increase the effectiveness of this behavior.

Galapogos rosy lizards that have been overlooked for 200 years are a new species. IN fact, they may be the species that is the predecessor to the other two species on the island.

Interesting that you capitalized science much in the same way people would capitialize God...

That teleportation thing is pretty cool. I amazed at the speed of the progress they are making since I was reading about it years ago.

Scientists find world's biggest snake

Quote:
The scientists estimate the snake lived 58 to 60 million years ago and was around 13 metres long. The giant, found in northeastern Colombia, dwarfs modern pythons and anacondas which usually don't exceed 6-6.5 metres and are thought to be the largest living snakes.

From the world of semiconductors...

Application: Intel developing optical interconnects (aka "wires"), or little tiny lasers, to communicate rather then wires. That helps with bandwidth, heat dissipation and speed.
