Not necessarily. What if 100% of Chu voters would have voted for the #3 candidate instead if Chu wasn't on the ballot? Unless DJ Kelly wins the seat via recount, there will be a special election if Chu resigns.
Of course, Chu is not going to resign, so this is all hypothetical anyway.

No. It definitely should go to a by-election so that the voters can have their say again in terms of representation.
If we had ranked ballots I could potentially understand going to the #2 candidate if the #1 resigned right away.

Cynical of me, but I'm one who believes cops generally cover for cops. especially in past years.
might be getting better now but I think it would still be an accurate stereotype to say cops take care of their own.
Seems the only time they get really punished is when they're caught on camera.

I'm not deep in the weeds on this one, but there is lots of wiggle room between properly following protocols and whether said protocols are actually any good or not.

I think if Chu had any sense of honour, he would quietly request during the recount that the 52 votes in his favour “disappear” and all of this is solved.

I’m well acquainted with the MGA and it doesn’t give that as an option. Maybe that’s something to write into the Act.

Well I'm not saying that Chu shouldn't have been formally charged or whatever, but there was a post saying that there were no longer any records because of the 2013 flood. I would expect that the current Chief of Police would speak to that, and not say he reviewed the records if that was the case?
I'm pretty cynical, but even I can't think that that Chief of Police would lie about that at this point.

I wasn't going down that path at all, just pointing out that:

This isn’t going away anytime soon, that’s for sure. Don’t see how he can remain on council and work within the “team” when more and more statements like this might come out.

While it looks bad on Chu, and it absolutely should, it also paints a really ugly picture of the CPS.
We're coming off a couple years of Police having egg on their faces and now this? I think people may have forgotten about Police reform a little too soon.

Absolutely. Who do you call when it's the police committing the crime?
It's very rotten, and needs commitment repairing.
How was this even a publication ban in the first place? And for how long? The public should've been aware of this long ago since it's a person in a position of authority.

I'm pretty sure it's a by-election. Last by-election I can think of (but not municipal) might be Jim Prentice?

How does one justify a Publication Ban on the eve of an election concerning an incident that happened 20 years ago?
It absolutely should have been front and centre....years ago!

One the less galling things about all this is Chu has been paid almost $1MM of tax payer money since being elected in 2013.
