Can Auston Matthews Score 70 Goals This Season?
Mods maybe a poll?
No player has hit 70 since Mogilny and Selanne both scored 76 in 92/93. Only eight players have ever scored 70 in a season.
He’s now on pace for 75.
I hate the leafs as much as the next guy but I’m hoping he hits 70. Even better if he hits 75. Always fun watching non Oilers chase history.

70 would be cool.
What would be more impressive 70 goals or McDavid and his 151 points last year?

I dunno if he can do it, but if he DOES score 70, he has to do this celebration.

370+ goals at 26. Time to start considering when he’ll pass Ovechkin and Gretzky.

The goals.
How many mcPP points in that 151? How many EN?
The way mcavi collects his points, I think I found Crosby's 100 point seasons in a tougher game that didn't reward embellishing more impressive.

He currently has 350, and I think he gets to 75 this year for a total of 374. That means he needs 527 goals to hit 901.
He'll be 27 to start next season. If he can maintain a high scoring pace he would need to average 52.7 goals per season to break it over 10 seasons. If he does 60 average goals/season over his next 4 year contract, that will leave him with 287 to go. He would need 48.7 average over his next 6 years to hit 901 (assuming Ovi finishes at 900).
I think there is a high likelihood that, barring any significant time missed, he will look to take the record in 10-11 years.

What makes OV and Gretz, OV and Gretz, is that they kept doing it when they were 74 years old.

Especially once McDavid gets there. If you think about it the 1st line PP would be McDavid, Matthews, Marner, Nylander, and Reilly. How do you defend that? He could break Gretzky's single season goal record.

High likelihood he average 50 goals a year for the next decade ????
It is very very hard to score 50 goals . Let alone for the next decade as an average - don’t forget age and injuries happen.
I think over the next 13 years it isn’t inconceivable he scores at a 40 goals pace and challenges those guys in his age 39-40 seasons , but thinking he’ll be scoring 530 goals over his next 10 years starting at his age is almost unthinkable

They’ll probably need to move Marner to add McDavid money which would be fine as they won’t need him. Could actually finally net them a strong top pair D.
Oilers will be back to the basement and their fans will be watching Flames - Leafs “potential Stanley Cup preview” games on HNIC.

Not at all. Lots of good young goalscorer, not a lot of old ones.

Was at that game, in the corner, right behind him as he's doing that. Fantastic moment and a great memory.
He scored 10 goals in 10 PERIODS to get to 50! Magical year, and an all-time favourite player (along with Orr, Sittler, Kiprusoff)

He's definitely got a shot. Strange that he's most likely going to have 2 seasons of 60 plus but 0 seasons in the 50's. Just the way injuries and Covid shortened some previous seasons.

Ovi scored 50 as recently as 2 years ago at age 36.
NHL scoring seems to be up in recent years. If it stays like this for the next decade, Matthews definitely has a shot of averaging close to 50/year over that span. It's an optimistic target, but it's possible.
