Good for Columbus. Seems like they are adding back picks they gave up a few seasons ago at the deadline. Smart asset management.

Very good trade for Columbus. Extremely skeptical about it for Toronto.

Columbus beat writer says it is likely Foligno will end up back in Columbus when free agency starts
Aaron Portzline @Aportzline
Looking ahead here, but there’s a very good chance Nick Foligno will re-sign with #CBJ this summer as an unrestricted free agent.

Jeez that is an overpay. Foligno is a solid addition, but the prize is absolutely bonkers

Seems like we should be getting in on this. Wish we had better rentals but I’d be ok with 2nds or 3rds right now

Meh, I don’t mind it for the Leafs. The North is pretty bad this year, if you can get a guy like Foligno for a late 1st who can potentially help you go on a deep run I don’t think it’s a terrible idea.

for who? The Flames UFAs aren't even on the same planet as Hall and Foligno

Treliving can’t even get a two-way going, no chance anyone ever includes him in a three-way.

Technically, any player with term and without an NMC could be a rental if the team that acquires them is fine exposing them to the expansion draft. Really, there is no material difference if the acquisition cost is the same as for a UFA. It would actually be a shrewd move to shield your other players from being picked.
It's more about optics than anything.

I am curious about the details of this deal. To be a pass through there needed to be a deal between SJ and Columbus that made sense on its own before the Leafs do the second half of the deal. Else what stops SJ from just holding onto him and dealing him separately.

depends how they do in the playoffs...I'm sure they will be one of the sportnet deadline winners but if they don't at least put up a fight in round 3 or better it seems like a loss to me.
Time will tell

This is probably just like the Savard trade. Foligno would have gone to San Jose for Noesen. Then Noesen traded to Toronto for the 1st and 4th.
SJ sends Foligno to Toronto for the 4th.

I’m not sure anyone on here would have called foligno snags a first and 3rd.
Derek Ryan would be a very good add for a contender. At these prices I could see us getting a 3rd for sure if we retained salary. Maybe 2 3rds or late 2nd

Foligno has 16 points. He’s never been a big PO producer (on bad teams). He’s 33. I think Ryan is as useful - maybe moreso, Bennett is the same type of player only younger (so you’d own his rights if you so chose).

I highly doubt Ryan would fetch either of those scenarios even with retained salary . Think at best we are looking at a 5th for Ryan.

His career playoff numbers are bad.
Derek Ryan is that 4th line center that you don’t care if he gets stuck on the ice against McDavid or Mathews. Pretty sure his head to head stats against the guys on pace for 130 points or the 65 goal man are good. Wins face offs great pk guy and is just a smart player who could slide up the lineup if you want to shorten bench. He’s the type of guy teams want to add depth for a cup run.
If these are the prices he’s probably worth a 2nd no question

Then that’s based on name and rep only. Ryan right now would be a great add, can play C or W, is a RHS, has good defence and underrated offence (he just hasn’t had the minutes or linemates to show it IMO).

if someone was offering a 2nd he would be gone
he has 6 points this season and 3 career playoff points...He isn't anywhere near as big of a name
