So this happened:
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calga...ible-1.5727452
Has anyone tried the cask strength version and can tell us if it's another Crown early harvest kind of shenanigan?
In general, I think Alberta Premium makes a damn good affordable whiskey product. Good on them to win an award.

Its a great whisky. You won't be able to find one in town any time soon if you look.

I’m so glad to see Alberta Premium win that award. I knew it was a good whisky and it’s nice to see an Alberta distiller be recognized. It’s my next whisky purchase.

Got a couple bottles and tried it the other day.
Didn't like it at first but it grew on me after I got past the alcohol level smack in the face. Strong AF though.

No doubt. I heard it has been sold out for more than 3-4 months already. I'm kinda mad I didn't even know AP put out a cask strength spirit. I have a 20 year on hand which I hear has similarities, but the cask strength has a lot going for it that makes it better than the 20 year.

Sounds like something to expect from a cask strength spirit. How is the sweetness? Their regular stuff IMO is very neutral with a heavier than expected sweetness which makes it great for mixing. I'm curious to know if it's basically turbo charged regular stuff, or if it's a flavor profile totally different than the regular stuff.
For those who don't like smoke, I often recommend AP over Crown for mixing.

Picked up the Lannister Lagavulin at Coop today, it was on for $85, down from $125, I think. They had a couple other GoT ones as well on sale. It was the 16th ave NW location, I don't see them on the website, so maybe just that location. They also have some other whiskeys on sale in the flyer, like Santori Toki, Bowmore 12, Laphroig quarter cask...and a sign saying they are out of Alberta Premium, so don't ask!

Tried it last night, It's not to far off in taste from the 8 year, though darker, and tastes a bit more iodiny. It doesn't hold a candle to the 16 year though, lacking the smoothness and depth. Considering the price compared to the 16, it's tough to recommenced over it, but if you like the 8, it might be worth picking up.

I have all of the GOT scotches but don't plan on opening them.
I don't expect the taste to be great comparatively anyway, so keeping them for collecting only.

I tried the Alberta Premium Cask Strength in October and it was excellent. Not surprised it won an award like that. It’s a very good whiskey.

I love the 16 year old Lagavulin, but have absolutely no appreciation for the 8 year. I’ve only had the 8 year once, but don’t think I’ll ever go back to it.
The 16 year remains one of my favourites.

I picked up a Kilchoman Am Burach - and wow - smoky but sweet. This will be my holiday drink for when the cold weather truly rolls in.

Got a nice bottle of Aberlour 12 from my head coach. really interesting flavor with a fruit/vanilla edge. Different from the usual scotch that I drink. But its really smooth, and it doesn't have that after effect burn that some scotches have on the way down.

For the Aberlour, use the basic rule... that if it doesn't have peat or smoke, add a touch of water or purified ice (small) and see if it alters or opens up the aroma. You might like it more, or you know you can go back to neat. I've had a couple of even high end scotches, that just a touch opened it up like an explosion. Others, I've been too happy with the flavour without, and didn't want to experiment, because I'd rather attach the taste to the experience at the moment.
Frequently this will also help if you do encounter burn, but IMO you shouldn't find burn in any decent liquor, it turns me off of it, like they are trying to hide something. I had no idea that tequila could be so good, until someone gave me a nice one with no burn.

No. Just get some Whistlepig single barrel. Pretty sure it's the same stuff at a slightly lower proof.
