Unfortunately the Flyers are now right back in the playoff mix on the back of a 6 game winning streak. So I don't think they are thinking about trades involving letting go of Simmonds right now.

Powerplay Quarterback
|
To Calgary:
Patric Hornqvist
Ian Cole
To Pittsburgh:
T.J. Brodie
Curtis Lazar
It sounds like Rutherford is ready to make a shake up to his line up and they could use another puck moving defenseman. Calgary could use a guy like Hornqvist that scores dirty goals and isn't afraid to get his nose dirty. Cole helps fill the gap in the lineup left by trading Brodie and Lazar is pretty much an add in at this point.

I think a good defenseman like Brodie is worth more than a Hornqvist.
Besides, this trade is hardly random.
Here is a random trade:
Simon Gagne for Drew Doughty.
There is no way that LA makes that trade, but it is random.

So almost a full line including a goalie for Wayne Simmonds. Might as well throw in another dmen and you'd have 3 forwards, 2 dmen, 1 goalie for Wayne Simmonds.
I don't watch a lot of Philly games but hard to believe he's worth that much.

Simmonds is a 30 goal/50-60 point guy. He's a second line guy, though, so whether he can put up numbers when facing the top checking units is a question. But he has another year after this one at just under $4M which is awesome, though he's gonna want to cash in next time around). Modified NTC, so who knows if he can even be obtained.

Simmonds would be nice, but he gets a 12-team no-trade list and I imagine Calgary's probably on there.

The Flames have their top four locked up for the next three years, with prospects in the A already chomping at the bit and eyeing a potential trade for one of them. There is no need for Enstrom on the Flames whatsoever.
Furthermore, Backlund is not leaving this team unless it's an absurd overpayment, which a rental defenceman and a 2nd does not amount to.

Brutal... we don’t want your garbage and we don’t need D. If that’s Wheeler instead of Enstrom maybe we are in the ballpark then and even then.. Wheeler is bound y start declining at 31 YO vs Backs at 28

The Islanders have somehow stalled Dal Colle's development, but the guy has loads of potential.
NY would add, and it might be because I've always liked Rittich more, and Parsons is coming, but I wouldn't be opposed to something around Gilles.
NY could use a little more hope in goal.
Here's my random trade :
From Calgary : Gilles, Brouwer
From NYI : Dal Colle, Chimera, 3rd

To CGY: Ryan O’Rielly ($1.5M retained), Evander Kane, Ian Cole
To Buff: Dougie Hamilton, Freddie Hamilton, Pitt 1st, Hagelin
To Pitt: Backlund, Brouwer ($1.5M retained)
Flames decide to shake things up in a big way. Unable to get a contract done with Backlund they make a move to acquire RoR who they have coveted for years. At $6M per for 5 more years at 26’he better fits the window of the current group. They also get Evander Kane who can be a top line winger for the team. The Flames could afford to keep him by moving out Backlund and Hamilton. They also add a Dman to slightly soften the blow of losing a top pairing D.
Buffalo moves on from a rental and gets a first round pick for him and he also helps them land the under 25 top pairing D they want. A 50pt Dman is worth more than a 50pt forward so Buffalo eats some salary and take less on Kane than if they moved him on his own. They get a speedy forward in Hagelin as well
Pitt solves the third line centre problem they have had since Bonino left. They get an upgrade in Backlund who could be a rental or someone they hope to sign long term. They get Brouwer for $3M while moving out the higher cap hitnin Hagelin.
Gaudreau-Monahan-Kane
Tkachuk-O’Rielly-Frolik
Bennett-Jankowski-Ferland
Hathaway-Lazar-Jagr
Giordano-Brodie Giordano-Hamonic
Cole-Hamonic. Or. Brodie-Stone
Kulak- Stone. Cole-Andersen
Not sure the down grade on D is worth the upgrade up front.
