UPD: conditions on Smith/Hamonic deals are as originally reported at time of trades
Looks like Freeway has uncovered some new info on the conditional picks:
Quote:
Ryan Pike @RyanNPike
Did some digging and got some clarity on the conditional #Flames pick for the 2018 Draft; If #Flames make playoffs, their 3rd goes to Arizona (via Smith trade). If they miss, they keep the pick.
So if they make the playoffs, the #Flames will not select until the 4th round of this year's draft.
The Mike Smith trade ends up being Smith for Brandon Hickey, Chad Johnson and a 2018 third (if CGY makes playoffs in 2018) or nothing (if they do not).
|
The previous reporting was that the conditional 3rd the Flames gave up would be upgraded to a 2nd if the Flames made the playoffs.
Also
Quote:
Ryan Pike
@RyanNPike
On Hamonic trade: if CGY makes playoffs in 2019, the 2019 second goes to the Islanders and the #Flames get the Isles' 4th. If they miss, it's 2020 second for 2020 fourth.
|
Previous reporting was:
Quote:
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Conditions get a little complicated. If CGY misses playoffs in 2019, NYI gets the 2nd round pick that year.
That's because there's a pre-existing deal in place with ARI, that if CGY makes playoffs in 2019, ARI gets CGY's 2nd rounder.
So if ARI gets that 2019 2nd rder, NYI will get 2020 2nd round pick from CGY.
If CGY sends NYI a 2nd in 2019, the 4th the Flames get back is also in 2019. If CGY sends 2nd in 2020, the 4th rder they get back is 2020.
|
News Updatesee posts #26 and #29 for new clarification from Freeway.
TLDR, the picks were as originally reported by McKenzie et.

So this is what it looks like?
2018 1st to Isles
2018 2nd to Isles
2018 3rd to Coyotes if Flames make the playoffs, no pick if they miss
2019 2nd or 2020 2nd to Isles - '19 if playoffs in '19 or '20 if they miss in '19

That Smith trade already was a steal but now it looks like an absolute fleecing

Smith is still the Coyotes' highest paid goalie.

That's awesome if it is indeed the case. I always thought Hickey+2nd was a little steep even if I really didn't think much of Hickey at the time
He's been worth whyever they paid though haha

There is a chance the Coyotes end up with nothing from the Smith trade except a bill for nearly $3M

So basically the picks in the Hamonic trade has nothing to do with the Smith trade. Right?

Right. There is no crossover.
Only pick involved in the Smith trade is potentially (likely) a 3rd round pick in 2018. Nothing else

So Hamonic trade is likely to be a 1st and two 2nds?
That one is not looking good.

If the Flames keep playing well and it turns out to be something like a #20, #50 and #50, I will consider it a great trade.
If it turns out to be a #31, #62 and #62, it will be one of the best trades in Flames history.
If it turns out to be a lottery pick and a 30-something pick and a 45ish pick, that would be a very different conversation.

Why is it that so many put so much value on magic beans? It's not like its a top 10 pick... Or even top 5. Even if we missed the playoffs, it'd probably be a 13-15 pick. It's very tough to pick a very good player there. Though, in recent drafts, there have been some great pick ups in those ranges.

Flames have to make the playoffs this season or it's a disaster. If they do and he plays well you have to consider it the cost of business in improving your team via trade.

I'm not trying to dump on Hamonic, just seemed like a lot of magic beans compared to what I would expect.
Admittedly, I pay very little attention to most off ice matters (market value of players, trades, salary cap etc.), so probably was the reality of acquiring that type of player in the off season.
