Flames Giordano for the Norris Trophy

We're only 28 games into the season, but the Flames are starting to run away with the division. A lot of this success is due to the strong play of Mark Giordano.

Through 28 games, Gio has 27 points and is a +14.

Here are the top scoring defensemen:

Thomas Chabot: 31 points
Morgan Reilly: 30 points
John Carlson: 29 points
Brent Burns: 29 points
Mark Giordano: 27 points

Giordano is the only one here who is known for his strong defensive play. Everyone else is a pure offensive defenseman. Ryan Suter and Roman Josi are having strong seasons, and are actually known to play some defense.

As of yesterday, Giordano is only 7th in Norris betting odds.

I have hardly heard any praise for Giordano's play, at least from outside of Calgary's media. It seems like he's still one of the most underrated players in the NHL for whatever reason.

What does this man have to do to actually earn some recognition?

You think there is a hope in hell he gets any this season with defensemen in Toronto scoring more points? Gio will be washed under the bridge while the talking heads will give all the love to Morgan Reilly.

1/3 season awards you would have to think he would be a finalist from that group.

I want Giordano to win this trophy for sure. I thought the Flames would miss Hamilton way more than they do, but I was definitely wrong. They really haven't missed him too much at all. Giordano is just amazing.

I'm really happy with Gio, and hope that he's a part of the Norris conversation.

But I hope that we can refrain from lobbing such huge praises on this team so early in December. We're talking about contending for the cup, the Norris and running away with the division.

I'm very happy with how well things are going, but these comments are going to seem really silly if this team sees a setback. This is exactly the kind of stuff we quote Oilers fans for writing.

As for the OP question, I think this could be the year people finally start talking about him.

We heard some buzz of TJ+Gio being Olympic considerations, but unfortunately their momentum stammered and they fell out of the limelight. If he can continue to lead this team through tough stretches and put points on the board at anywhere near the pace he is RN I could see him sitting around top-10 for defenseman points and right in the thick of it. He's shown consistency in the past, and now his team is clicking. This could be the year that he gets a serious look, and over the next 2/3 of the season I'll bet his leadership is also put to the test.

That isn't likely something Reilly or Chabot are going to have in their cap.

Gio for Norris in 2018/19... I can get behind that.

Exhibit "A" - Something about making teammates better:

Maybe if every time they mention his name they should add "a Toronto native"

to pry some votes from the center of the universe.

I think it goes both ways. Sometimes players just develop a natural chemistry together,

They each know their roles as well as know and trust where their partner will be on the ice.

I know Norris is a season to season award, but I think that careers do factor into decision making.

Gio is 15th in all time points as an active defenseman. To put a little context around that only two players who have played fewer games than him are ahead of him. Kristopher Letang and Erik Karlsson.

Of the 14 players ahead of him in points only 4 have a better career plus minus. Zdeno Chara, Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook and Drew Doughty.

I think that from a career perspective he is due for some recognition as one of the best in the league at that position.

If there’s one person missing Mark Giordano, it’s Dougie Hamilton. Guy has 9 points this season and is a -5. Jaccob Slavin is on pace to be a -40 playing with him and he’s never been a minus player.

Watching Dougie and TJ’s performances should be enough to crown Gio as thr Norris Trophy champion.

There's no way Morgan Reilly doesn't win this with the hype around that team.

I think he’s got a chance but it will take some time for the conversation to build momentum, and it will need to start with the local media.
Right now when the Pinders and Boomers do their regular hits with folks like Chris Johnstone, Burke and Friedman, the prep notes that they’re circulating are focused on three things: Goaltending, “What’s up with James Neal?” and Nylander. The Nylander slot is going to transition to “What’s Tkachuk’s next contract going to look like?”
Those guys need to start consciously shifting those planned discussions away from one of the other two topics, and start bringing up “Is Gio a legit Norris candidate?” every week. After Burke and Friedman have had that discussion a few times each on the morning show and Flames at 5, they’ll start bringing it up on HNIC. And that’s when it will take off.

Guys build reps by winning in the playoffs. I'm not trying to diminish how well he's playing, but 8 games over 12 years isn't going to give you a top tier reputation.

I'm betting as long as Burns hangs around the top, he wins. Carlson will get votes too. Chabot won't get many votes and I think Reilly will be the same. As much as Toronto gets hype, they don't get respect defensively. Reilly scored a bunch last year and got no votes at all.

Personally, I think John Carlson is most likely to win the Norris at the moment.
That wouldn't bug me as much as Reilly, Dumba or Chabot winning it.

Carlson will finish with 65+ points, barring injuries. But Gio is better.
