I always liked Monahan, but the man got slagged around here as a soft, no effort guy who lived off of Guadreau. Same people then were incensed that Treliving paid to dump the $6+M to get Kadri (which was because Lucic trades fell through) and now are incensed that he got better and Montreal will benefit.

Thankfully the organisation seems to finally be making solid asset management decisions.
That whole string of events was an example of compounding problems.

- Make a trade for Chris Higgins that involves you having to take Ales Kotalik too
- The 2nd in that deal was included to include Kotalik and still keep Byron in the deal. As an aside, I remember we all thought the deal was bad even when we thought the Flames were getting the 2nd. "WTF you mean WE are trading the 2nd".
- Put Byron on waivers and lose him for nothing.

Hilariously bad string of decisions.

I agree and I think the 'Peters Fiasco' actually saved his job.

From 'not interviewing anyone else' to the play of the team and then the whole firing...you cant blame the racism incident on Treliving, thats not going to come out in a job interview and then they just went through COVID and into 'Safe Harbour' with Sutter...

I'd have canned him after the Bubble Season and the team missed the playoffs.

Thanks to the glorious wizard, Montreal may end up with 2 1st picks for Monahan, the guy they didn’t even have

Whaa....

By whom??

Theres a lot to be said about Monahan, but 'soft and no effort' are not among them.

I'm happy for the guy. I hate the trade too, but at the time I thought his body was done.

Montreal are going to make out like bandits over this.

To be fair he signed there for a low UFA deal, he wouldn't have been a Flames asset this year either. He was injured and untradable last season.

He definitely got slagged for being soft. He was tough in the playing through injuries part but he played a soft game.

Part of it, I think, is that there is a small contingent of hockey fans who think every player over six feet tall should be a face-puncher and call him soft if he plays a different game. I even remember a couple of posts on CP criticizing Zadorov's physical play because he didn't fight enough.

There's more than one kind of toughness in hockey. Joe Nieuwendyk didn't hit much and rarely took penalties, but he took more punishment than most players just from standing in the goal mouth and looking for tip-ins.

As nice as a year as he's having, Monahan isn't returning a 1st round pick at this point in his career. I'm thinking a 2nd at most or a combination of lower end prospects.

Imagine that. An injured guy not crashing and banging

He was great at finding the quiet spots and scoring clutch goals
