Yeah...Covid shouldnt be the only thing leveling cities and murdering people. They have to ride that train.

Superman stories have to be smart by definition, for just that reason. If you have an indestructible man you have to find some other form of conflict. In the comics, there was always some fisticuffs, especially in the golden and silver ages, but the best Superman stories of the last few decades have centred around the existential, the metaphysical, the emotional, the political... ect.
The first two movies kind of worked because the first was an origin story, and the second featured a villain with the same powers. The third movie fell off the rails. In the DCEU, Man of Steel was another origin movie, but after that, they have a movie where the premise is that Supes is stunned that anyone would have the audacity to attack him physically. That storyline was quickly abandoned (Martha!) in favor of a Cave Troll. They added Superman to the shoot-em-up that was Justice League, when he showed up, the story was over. Of course it was.
The only way they can have a good Superman involved story from here on out is if they hire a smart writer. One who can avoid many of the existing comic book stories, because so many of them fall into the fisticuffs trap.
A Superman movie where he doesn't punch a single person, would be a successful Superman movie.
It'll never be made, unfortunately.

Superman Returns is an excellent NyQuil substitute.

Batman Vs Superman should have been that movie.
It had the start right, in terms of Batman being paranoid of Superman's powers and him starting to frame Superman as a hero that was too powerful and couldn't be trusted.
But then they decided to cast a horrible version of Lex Luthor, and decided to shoe horn in Doomsday and some of the other Justice League since they were in a rush to get to their justice league movie.

Superman does have weaknesses. Besides magic and kryptonite, his main weakness is that he always does what's right and cares about all life. His foil is Luthor, who has no moral compass. As far as superpowered heros go, in effect, Superman isn't all that different than Thor or the Hulk. Once you get to having a being of that power, you need to get creative with the writing.
Writing a great Superman story isn't all that hard IMO. The best ones have a combination of slugging it out with an equally powerful foe and mental games with a morally corrupt foe.
There are lots of good Superman stories out there.

You had me until that point. I'm sorry, if I'm going to watch a superhero movie, at some point, there needs to be a scene of them kicking ass. Add some complexities and moral dilemmas, sure, but it still needs to be action movie, not a courtroom drama.

You still have lots of action, without having Superman punch someone. For example, an enemy creating natural disasters that Superman has to deal with. Superman actually has lots of foes that he never punches, for example Lex Luthor.

Except he usually punches what Lex creates. Whether it's his robots or a situation to involve someone who is close to Superman's power (Doomsday in BvS).

Yes....so much punching.
Which is why its always funny when Superman 'loses his powers' because hes not all that smart and has no other real physical abilities.
He really is a flying DudeBro. His costume might as well be made by 'Affliction.'

Who could forget the legendary scene from "The Quest for Peace" when Lex and Jon Cryer attach a strand of Superman's hair to a missile and launch it into space where Superman catches it and throws it into the Sun where it explodes and forms Nuclear Man who Superman punches a bunch and then locks in an elevator and drills it into the Moon?

My two favourite Superman stories are Kingdom Come and What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way? They start off showing how the public turns on Superman because his ways are old fashioned, a new batch of superheroes come in to replace him, they make things worse by being more vicious and Superman has to come back and show them the error of their way.
Typing that out makes them sound terrible.
It's actually not. Check them out. You won't be disappointed.

Usually yes. In the best Lex storylines, however, the punching is just a minor side plot. Meanwhile, Lex is busy winning the presidency.

I’d love to see a superman for all seasons adaptation. It portrays Clark as much more of a farm boy and really delves into simple farm boy Clark versus evil super genius Lex Luthor. Would work best if it wasn’t a tent pole though. Less is more type deal.

The latest DCAM wraps up the current story arc that started in 2013 and is really good. The animated dc movies are consistently better than the Hollywood blockbusters

Directors should finance these movies if they want to release a cut without interference. Or get an agent who can negotiate it into their deal for them.

I just find it convenient and difficult to believe that you get these movies that are universally panned as crap and then the Directors coming out years later saying this wasnt the movie they were going to make.
'Theirs' of course, would have been good.

I love how "Awful movie was going to be great but got ruined by the cut, you should see the XYZ cut" has become pretty much standard for all the DC movies.
Sure it was. Sounds an awful lot like the flood of "The prequel trilogies weren't so bad after all" articles that came out after Disney bought Star Wars.
