[Signing] Flames sign Joakim Nordstrom (1 year, $700k AAV)

I like this signing. Low risk contract and good depth move. I can't see someone being able to play 400 NHL games without being good at something. I'm hopeful he will be a good fit.

This is a weird argument, since a League-minimum salary is always the ideal cost of an individual roster spot. $1.4 m tied up in a single player will always be more cap-costly than a $700,000 player, since each of these players only accounts for a one of 22 or 23 roster spots. Signing two guys at a total of $1.4 m is not what is preventing the team from signing one player @ $1.4 m. Having cap-space tied up in expensive bottom-six players like Lucic and Ryan is.

I love the Markstrom signing. It just chaps my ass that we have everyone and their timbit running Gaudreau out of town when he is having a bad playoffs, when Lindholm has been 10 times worse.

But yeah you got it wrong. lol. I like this Nordstrom signing too.

Rinaldo we had to keep to 3-5 minutes of ice time in the play ins cause he's a liability and this guy is a downgrade on even Jankowski offensively.

The numbers don't work well with a $1.4M signing. Right now on CF Rinaldo/Gawdin/Robinson/Froese are all not on the NHL roster and only 11 forwards. The Flames have $3.3M in space. Switch Nordstrom for a $1.4M signing and you have $2.6M. You still need two more forwards and you need to sign Kylington. Two more fwds are $1.4, leaving $1.2 for Kylington and then no wriggle room at all.

Also, some of those guys are ill suited for the PK need without Jankowski and Reider. Sheary is good, Haula can do it, Grabner has done it (but is 33).

Also, Flames are only at 40/50 contracts and $700K is completely buriable in the minors if, for some reason, you want to sign a better player.

Bruins fans seem to have good things to say about him (from r/hockey):

Flames fans should like this signing. I'm kind of bummed Bruins didn't sign him to the same deal. He's not putting up many points but he plays great defensively, will really help on the PK, and chip in a few grinder points here and there. Definitely the kind of guy you want on your 4th line.

Part of a very effective fourth line 2 seasons ago. Not so much this past year. If he can find that game again this is a good signing for CGY. If not he can just be a net zero fourth liner

He's not any kind of gamechanger, but he goes 100% on every shift and is a pretty solid puck possession guy. I'll miss him. Treat him well, please.

Always been a fan of Nordstrom's game. Didn't have a great 2019-20, but was fine IMHO when I was watching Bruins game. A great 2018-19 season (love the Game 7 goal on Andersen) was much needed for him as I thought he was on his way out of the league after doing nothing in 2017-18 in Carolina. Should be a decent PK option for the Flames.
