Default Can we talk about Klimchuck

8 points/5Gp=1.6 PPG
4 points 1 game
1 shy of his total point total for the entire last season.

I realize his ppg is not sustainable( hopefully it is) but does this point to a blip on the radar to start the season or has he finally figured out the professional ranks?

Expect the former, hope for the latter. That's all you can do at this point.

It's possible... also possible that it's just a blip. Hopefully it's a breakthrough.

I feel really good about the farm in general. With the core essentually established I feel we just need the farm to produce quality complementary players.

Only if you spell his name correctly

Hard not to be discouraged when a "skilled" prospect only puts up 3+6 in 55 games. If he can play the whole year and stay close to PPG I think he will have had a very successful season. I'll keep my expectations tempered though...

Between the AHL highlights and what I saw in development camp, a new Klimchuk has arrived. Prior to last year I don't recall seeing any glimpses of offensive prowess from Klimchuk.

He must of spent all Summer working on building up that release, because it looks NHL caliber now.

Klimy is a bud of mine, guy is probably the most dedicated person I have ever seen, everything he does is with the intention of improving his game.

Not surprised at all by his early success. Its been a steep development path the coaches have put him in. Last season can't be judged on statistics he was put in a shut down defensive role to improve that side of his game, and from all reports and feedback he received did an outstanding job at it. He was always able to put points on the board. I think last season will go a long way for his career. He is also for the first time in years healthy, thats huge to string consistent games together.

Wouldnt surprise me at all to see him get a call up late in the season and battle for an every day spot next year

Hopefully he's for real, but only time will tell.

Max Reinhart put up similar numbers as Klimchuk in junior, better numbers as a rookie in the AHL and then 63 points in 66 games as an AHL sophomore, so while I'm glad he's found his offense as a pro, I'm going to keep my expectations in check for the time being.

I don't Klimchuk will ever be able to get a bunch of points in the NHL but he has a chance to be a 3rd line winger.

a couple posts about Klimchuk from the Heat thread

Give anyone the opportunity to play with players that can both pass the puck and receive passes, and you'll get scoring opportunities. Last year he was playing in a very defensive role and most of his points came from individual efforts because he had to do most of everything himself.

Their line this year is basically playing as the Backlund Frolik line in Calgary.

The player Klimchuk has reminded me of from the moment he was drafted is Curtis Glencross.

A decent all around player with a great shot. Last year, he was learning how to play defensively. That was something that was lacking in his game because of the fact that he was always the scorer on his teams. It was the same type of hurdles that Poirier went through in learning how to play away from the puck. Now that he's combining both sides of the puck together it's not a shock that he is having success. I would not be surprised if he gets a recall this year, just as I am expecting Jankowski to make his debut at some point.

It is an encouraging sign that he may develop into a quality middle sixer eventually. Just have to see he can both keep it up and build on what he has already accomplished.

Also, speaking of Poirier, he has been getting his chances as well but not getting some shots on net. He has been better thus far this year overall also, but not quite as impactful as his fellow 2013 1st round pick linemate.

Actually, if I remember correctly from his draft year, Klimchuk was known to have a good shot.

Yep, and he wowed everyone with it. IIRC, Steinberg tweeted about it a few times (or was it Kerr? can't remember now).

There seem to be alot of myths about Klimchuk. I've seen poor shot, can't pass, can't skate, poor defensively... etc. None were ever true. He's similar to a guy like Matt Stajan, strong in every area, but elite in none.

Best comparison I've heard for Klimchuk is Michael Frolik.

Did you know: in the U18s for Canada a couple years ago Klimchuk took over Sam Bennett's spot on the top line for Canada's gold medal team playing alongside McDavid and Reinhart? He's no slug.

I've always thought of Klimchuk as kind of a Stempniak. In any case, this is good to see. I recall him mentioning in a couple of interviews the past several months that his main focus this offseason was re-energizing his offensive prowess now that he'd learned responsibility on both sides of the puck. He spent a lot of the summer working on skill and goal scoring.
