Considering all the injury issues the Yankees have had lately you'd think they would avoid a player with a history of injuries. Dude has already had 2 Tommy John surgeries.

Seems weird to me that they'd go that route rather than sign Tanaka or Paxton. They must think they can spin their Yankee magic on Tallion I guess.

That's all that it can be. Perhaps Tanaka and Paxton are asking for too much, but then Toronto's there to pick up one if they don't, so it is odd that they'd make that decision.

For sure. The Yankees don't have the salary flexibility unless they want to get into the luxury tax payroll level.
I wish Bauer would make up his mind. I imagine his decision is holding up the next tier of starters like Paxton, Tanaka, Odorizzi, etc.

I’m still holding out hope for Kris Bryant and Hendricks so we don’t have to go down the Bauer route.

I don't mind going trading for Bryant and Hendricks, my only point of concern is that this rotation already has o e soft tossing finesse pitcher, not sure how comfortable I am with two at the top of the rotation.
Hendricks is a very good pitcher don't get me wrong, but his fastball sits at 87mph on a good day.
Personally I would make the Bryant and Hendricks trade and still go after Bauer. I think the Jays have the payroll flexibility to do that.

My preference is to sign two of, in order of preference, Walker, Paxton, Odorizzi.
Failing that a two or 3 year deal at whatever AAV Bauer wants. If he wants to be the highest paid player, give him $40 million per season for three years. That way the contract is done when it's time to start paying the young guys. Ight be a pipe dream but supposedly that is what the Mets are offering.
My least favourite of the options is trading away young assets. No, not all of them are going to work out, but if you are signing short term free agents while your young core is on the rookie contracts, you can extend the window.
Ideally, a few of the young upcoming assets are in the bigs in three years helping form the core when you are buying free agent years with extensions to the young guys of today when they are arbitration eligible.

I wonder how much the Cubs are asking for Bryant.
One year left, huge salary, coming off his worst season and a rash of injuries.
If he can be had for cheap I think I'd rather the Jays trade for just him and then go after a UFA starter. Hendricks will have a ton of value and cost the Jays a key prospect or two, so I've kind of changed my tune on that one.
Even if he's just a one year stop gap that buys Groshans/Martin/Martinez another year of development in the minors, then so be it.

To no ones surprise, Realmuto ends up re-signing with the Phillies. 5 x $115.5 million
Come on Bauer, pick spot already.
Also, sounds like Tanaka may be going back to Japan.

Nice, good bounce back candidate who can rebuild his value and can help Jays fill in gaps until their young minor league players graduate.

Woah. Love the deal. Show me what you got deal that could benefit both sides. The dude had a bomber season in 2019. So the upside is there.

Excellent signing. And means no Vlad at 3B.
Pricey but it’s 1 year, who cares

18M for Semien? I know it's just a one year deal but that still seems crazy to me.

Yeah Semien is a great deal.
Guy was an MVP candidate in the last full season, and is still only 30.
Didn’t have a great year last year but it was only 53 games last year in a weird shortened season, and his game really picked up in the last 20 games.

Sure... but every other year he's been a pretty average player. I'm skeptical. I suppose I can look at it as insurance against a Bichette absence since he is a legit good defender at short. Does Rowdy have options left? I don't see a spot for him on the roster anymore.

Yeah, one year can't go wrong with this IMO.
MVP candidate in his last full season (was 3rd place IIRC) and then last year he started slow (24 WRC+ after 14 games) but then was back his 2019 self with 133 WRC+ and 2.0 WAR in his last 46 games.
If he's a 130 WRC+ hitter again, the Jays line up will be ridiculously deep.
Too bad he's not a lefty or a switch hitter though.
His D should be passable at 2B I would think no?

1. - CF - Springer
2. - 3B - Biggio
3. - SS - Bichette
4. - RF - Hernandez
5. - 2B - Semien
6. - LF - Gurriel
7. - 1B - Vladdy
8. - DH - Tellez / Grichuk
9. - C - Jansen / Kirk
Yikes.

That's why you only had to risk giving him 1 season though. And he still had a couple of 4 WAR seasons before that - which is still pretty valuable.
As Roof-Daddy just posted his final 40 games last season were great, but a horrible start is what made his year overall look poor. If he actually had a full year to outrun the bad start he probably looks great again.
Usually Shortstops can play 3rd or 2nd - so I think they will have a fit for him somewhere on the roster for sure.
A 1 year deal for a guy his age that was an MVP finalist in the last full non-covid season is a good deal no matter how you slice it - even at $18M.

I'm now a little more comfortable with Semien at that price after reading a bit of the positivity here. For a show me deal it's steep, but it's one year and as long as it isn't holding back from signing someone else big, I have no problem. In the past he's been inconsistent which is always a question of which one will show up. Again, too many of these gambles lead to disappointments, but one or two here and there are just fine.
I really wished Realmuto would have come here at that price and age, but I guess he was wanting Philly all along.

Damn, I am pretty freaking excited right now.
This team is in a position to compete right now, starting this season, and they will probably still add a starting pitcher if they can. Maybe even another bullpen arm.
The payroll is at roughly $128 million with this signing. They have room to add still.
BUT, on top of that, they have kept the prospect base INTACT.
Pearson, Kirk, Groshans, Martin, Manoah, Woods-Richardson, Moreno, Kloffenstein, Martinez, Hiraldo etc are still coming people!
Competitive now AND a strong prospect pool. Have we ever been able to say that about a Jays team before?
