The problem I see is if the Jays wanted to match that deal they would need to put the likes of Bichette or Biggio in the deal. That probably was, and should be, a non starter.
The strength of their trade assets is prospects, not MLB ready talent and it looks like Cleveland wanted a mix of both. Don't really see how the front office should get any blame here.
sure if the season is starting and there is no upgrade to the team questions should be asked, but that's a ways away. Was only December 27th last year they signed Ryu after most fans thought they were going to "miss" on everyone.

Not the big news we've been hoping for but the Blue Jays have re-signed A.J. Cole.

Rumours circulating about about Kris Bryant possibly being traded as soon as today by the Cubs.
Wondering if the Jays could be in the mix - as part of a bigger deal.

I would hope they're in the mix. They were in the mix for Lindor and they need a 3B way more than they need a SS.

Kris Bryant is a lesser player than Lindor (IMO), so if the price can be had cheaper than Lindor than you go for it. I'm obviously ignoring Bryant's contract situation which I don't care to look up, but if it involves Gurriel or Grichek, without giving back any of the top 8 or so, back that truck up and make it happen. I also read yesterday that the Mets again could be in on Bryant, FWIW. Looks like some pieces may start to fall now.

Bryant wouldn't cost that much, and he only has one year left at 18.6. Somewhere around Hernandez and the 10-12 rated prospect. If they could get Kyle Hendricks at the same time, that would be great.

Bryant and Hendricks would be a pretty nice consolation prize for missing on Lindor and Carrasco.

3 years, 54 mil. Good chunk of cash.
I'm guessing the Jays were runner-ups again?

Would have liked Hendriks, bit definitely not at that price. Way too much for a reliever who has only been good for a year and a half. Spending big on relievera is a mistake more often than not.

Yeah if Blue Jays were runners up that’s a blessing in disguise.
That’s crazy money for a reliever with 1 good full season.

That’s a crazy huge deal for a reliever. Largest in history. So it’s 3 years 39 million with a team option/buyout that makes it 54 million guaranteed. That’s bananas.
He’s definitely paid his dues. But 1.5 good seasons in the cavernous pitcher friendly Oakland Coliseum with above average defenders will do that for you. Wouldn’t be surprised to see his numbers drop And all of a sudden that contract looks scarier than it already is.
Glad the Jays didnt cough up that contract because that’s probably what Lemahieu will get and Lemahieu>Hendriks.

Yeah, it'd be nice to sign a high leverage BP arm/closer with Giles now gone and Romano still relatively unproven.
But that's a lot of coin, and the money is better spent (IMO) on filling more glaring holes in the roster, like CF or 3B. Especially when the current FO seems to be able to find high leverage arms from the bargain bin that come in and perform, seemingly every single off season. Just look at Cole, Bass and Dolis last season.

The Jays are going to have to give out a bad deal to land one of these high end free agents, they just have to be smart who they give the bad contracts to.
IMO spending big money on relievers is never a good idea, there is just to much volatility with relievers.
I am fine with spending money up the middle CF, SS, C and SP. That's where you win games.
