lanny 40 Years Ago tonight...

I watched the game on television. I remember Ed Whalen starting the PBP with "NHL in Calgary! Pinch me, I must be dreaming."

I was curious about the players... Kent Nilsson was pretty good, but the rest?

They played the Nordques, which was a bit anti-climactic (being a former WHA team). It didn't really hit me until the following week when the Bruins came to town.

Sad that I only remember Robbie Ftorek for his "eat another doughnut" meltdown.

Jim Schoenfeld was the donut guy, I think.

Ftorek did throw a bench, though:

I have two tickets and souvenir mounted pucks from that game.
Dad got to go, not me... (to be fair, I was 7)

Oh crap, you guys are right and I have misplaced memories. Apologies to Ftorek and his family for the doughnut reference.

Turns out the sadness is all mine.

Yes, it was Jim Schoenfeld who told Koharski to "have another donut you fat pig." That was the driver behind Officer Koharski in Wayne's World.

I've got one of the best Koharski stories, but I'll save it for another time, keep this focused on the Flames first game.

Dan Bouchard jumping through a be-logoed Flaming C hoop at the start of the player introductions was pretty funny. Wish there was footage of it.
