Such a polararizing player in Calgary from the day he was picked.

"Best player in the draft" when selected, and then even when he was called up there were those that thought he was filler while others a future 2nd line center.

He was productive for the most part, but just not that hard to play against.

Oh Janko...I still don't know whether to call you a bust or if this is all still part of you being a late bloomer and you just need some confidence.

This playoff run could really help clear that up.

Feels like top line talent not good enough anywhere else to be on the top line, so shoehorned into a bottom 6 role... where he still doesn’t have enough grit or smarts to excel.

Leaving him as... good offensive choice for the pk?

I will never forget that draft. It's the perfect example of the Feaster/Weisbrod regime. Lots of big statements, little to back it up. "Best player in the draft," "best player not in the NHL." When you look at the players the Flames passed on to take Jankowski, it's just bad. One of the more painful decisions to come out of that era of the Flames.

He's a fine bottom six player, but I don't see how he was worth the 1st round pick.

I am normally one of the biggest Flame player sympathizers, but Jankowski has used up all of his good graces. I won't be sad to see him go.

I understand why they liked him. It's a very attractive combination of physical attributes - size, speed, puck skills. If he had hit - it would have been potentially a game changer.
Odd that what seems to be holding him back is physicality and aggresiveness.
But from a raw tools point of view - I get why they liked him.
20/20 now shows it wasn't a good decision. And I never liked the hyperbolic statements from that regime.

But I get the decision.

As an aside that draft is terrible
The #2 point producer is a guy who is barely hanging on to an NHL job and being passed around team to team.
Just a cruddy cruddy draft.

Any one of Wilson, Hertl, Teravainen or Vasilevskiy would have been nice in retrospect..

They went in that order #16-19.

Our original pick was #14.

I still say Janko has a higher ceiling than Bennet!

No one has ever worn it for the Flames (or any other number between 68 and 77).

I'm sure there are a few classy fans who (tried to) put 69 on their Flames jersey over the years. I was going to vote for one of them.

I remember that first season when they played on the same line. So much optimism gone to waste

As others have said - he has size, he has skill, he's a decent skater. If he had any sort of physicality or aggression in his game he would be a very sought after player. Just plays way too soft for a guy his size which makes him frustrating to watch.

Not giving up on either Bennett or Janko yet. No expectations though.

I wish we could merge them into a single player. He’d be great.

We could call him Ben Hanowski.

Janko is okay I guess. He'll never live up to his draft hype but could have a long career as a bottom 6 forward who can kill penalties and contribute 10 goals a season.

Feaster's mangling of that draft really handcuffed Treliving's rebuilt. If Wilson gets drafted then he didn't need to overpay for RW free agents. If Vasilevskiy gets drafted then he doesn't need to keep giving up draft picks for goalies. is right.
