Flames moving AHL affiliate to Colorado Springs
David Pagnotta
@TheFourthPeriod
Some AHL-related news: Hearing Colorado Springs is in the process of securing an AHL franchise via relocation of a current club. It’s possible they could play out of the Broadmoor World Arena, which holds 7,750 for hockey. Timeline unclear, but could happen for Fall 2021 or 2022.
John Hoven | The Mayor @mayorNHL
This ties back to our report from October re: #Flames looking at the Springs. From what we've heard, CGY ownership pushing in this direction, with a short term bridge deal in Stockton. Good timing too, as Colorado College (current arena tennant) broke ground Sat on new building.
David Pagnotta @TheFourthPeriod
As @mayorNHL reports, I’ve also heard the expected club is the Calgary Flames’ affiliate that could move from Stockton to Col Springs. Deal isn’t done, but told it’s getting there.

At least the prospects can save money by not buying bulletproof suits anymore.

This is good news IMO. I really like the Springs and that arena is adequate certainly. With CC breaking ground on a new facility it was going to run the risk of being empty a lot. Don't think there are any suites in that arena to speak of but does that really matter for the A?
Denver is an hour drive away and lots of direct flights to anywhere in NA.

Colorado Springs is a nice town. Big step up, in terms of quality of life, from stockton.

I think it's a good move for the Flames to have the team there vs. Stockton but I'm not sure it's a good business move so for that part of it I guess it depends on who's carrying the risk here.
Classic case of AHL affiliate in another team's backyard. Flames have seen this story before.
And with Colorado College being the main tenant, will that mean not many weekend dates or prime dates to choose from? That could be troubling as well.
Also, isn't the current arena there olympic sized? That would not be good for prospect development if they didn't rectify that. I'd think they probably will find a way to fix that.

CC building their own rink. Undoubtedly leading to a great lease for the new tenant at World Arena. The ice might be Olympic sized but that shouldn't be a tough fix if so.
It's true most COS NHL fans would likely be Avalanche fans. But COS is a big city, about 750K in the metro area. We'll see how that part goes.

SLC was the rumour a while ago, right?
This does look like some looooong bus rides through multiple mountain passes in the winter. Or would relatively remote teams be flying at all? How did it work from Abbotsford?

The team flew everywhere when they were in Abbotsford (or at least flew to a destination at the start of a road trip and bussed between cities before flying home). Visiting teams would fly in/fly out for road trips.
I don't know what Colorado does now, but I doubt they take a bus across to California for every road trip.

They can spy on the Aves and provide intel if we bump into them in the playoffs sometime in the future

All I can get

Sounds like the Omaha AkSarBen Knights set-up. Minor Pro team in the ratty old barn while the resident college team moves to a spanking new arena.
Add in the proximity to Denver, with Loveland (Colorado Eagles) two and half hours away.
Great for plane connections though.

That doesn't appear to be the issue here. The arena in question was built in the late-90s, so it shouldn't be too out of date.
The college is moving into a much-smaller on-campus arena.

Not a good idea to put your affiliate in another NHL teams backyard. Abbotsford was doomed for that reason IMO.

Yeah the arena is nice. Colorado College is building their own because they are a small private college with lots of $’s. The 3 mile commute to World Arena was too much I guess.
Obscure fact: Bob Johnson was CC’s head coach before he was Badger Bob.

Abbotsford more because it was a rival. I don't think Stockton suffered much being right next to San Jose

I think it may have been awhile since some of you have been to Colorado Springs! Fort Collins is a nice town. Colorado Springs is kind of dumpy.
That said, certainly it's not Stockton.
