I've been listening to these guys a lot the last couple of weeks. They remind me of HotHotHeat but during Make Up the Breakdown (when they were good). They're from BC too!

^^^^Their Circulation album was very good. They have openly stated one of their biggest influences was the Japanese band Mass of the Fermenting Dregs. Their band name was a reference to MotFD.

It seriously makes me jealous that Japan has such a great music scene that they have bands like this.
Gonna go on a tangent here.. I've had a few beers...
In China the music here is pure trash. No offense to Chinese people. It's a great country. But their music is so bad. It's definitely partly due to openness of ideas but I feel like they are unwilling to listen to anything that is slightly different.
Backstreet Boys is like their go to for western music.
And some group called Michael Learns to Rock which is sooo bad and when I tell Chinese people no one knows them they can't believe it.
They like Linkin Park too. But that's like hardcore stuff.
Anyways...Any other Japanese bands? I love the riffs from that band you recommended.
Out of curiosity I decided to check out the "skittles grilled rapper" expected some sort of millenial mumble rap, instead it's the most I've enjoyable rap in years.

This is hilarious. Yes, popular music in China is so bad. I grew up with it and exposed to it constantly so I can say first-hand that Chinese popular music is very cheesy. And I've been to many karaoke parties and gatherings over my lifetime and members of my family and their friends will invariably choose cheesy Chinese ballads to sing. I don't think it's something inherent in our DNA though because me and my cousins who were either raised in Canada or were born here are standing to the side shaking our heads. So Chinese people are capable of recognizing the inherent cheese in Chinese music so there is hope!
My personal theory why the Japanese music scene kick ass while the Chinese music scene sucks is that the Japanese have a greater reverence for American pop culture than the Chinese. I think it has to do with the American occupation of Japan after WWII, so the Japanese adopted things like denim and Coca-Cola and baseball and burgers and bourbon and rock n'roll decades, or even a half-century before the Chinese did. But I think this means Chinese pop music will eventually get better over time.
As for recommendations, I know I have mentioned her before in these forums but I think the most interesting musician in Japan right now is Oomori Seiko. The song embedded below is so great, an anthem of love for all young outsiders in Japan who feel alienated and depressed in Japan's oppressive culture of conformity.

The kids are doing their darndest to keep me away from hearing much in new music, so thanks for the suggestions everyone. There's some gems in this thread.
I cannot stop playing the most recent album from The War on Drugs. It always puts me in a good mood. This track has a crazy amount of layers of sound, and when it swells, I just start to smile. I can't recommend the album A Deeper Understanding enough.
And I also discovered Childish Gambino over the last year or so, and I've been enjoying his music. However, this new track is something special and should be celebrated, especially for the video that accompanies it. If you aren't listening to him yet, you should be.

Ok, I've decided to explore some different stuff, I used to be that heavy metal hardcore guy with what everyone else has guilty pleasures that go from outright pop to soft rock.
The other night, I said, my parents always listened to classical music and opera's, but they couldn't have always been that way, I mean they were in their 20's in the 50's at the height of the rock genesis, and they were still young in the 60's and 70's so they probably listened to the softer hippy stuff, and classic rock.
Then in the 80's they switched.
So I decided that I'm going to explore it and create a play list of classical music and opera.
So lets start with what I picked up on opera.
Now I will put down that I've liked and forgotten about Sarah Brightman, I mean I got to see her do the phantom of the Opera a long time ago.
But she's got this amazing voice and range and combines some of the Kate Bush elements into it.
So I started out by grabbing some of her work with Andrei Bocelli.
then I grabbed Nella Fantasia
Then I sat down and grabbed Pie Jesu
Then because I was really getting the Sarah Brightman vibe I grabbed Hallelujah and her version of Queen's who wants to live forever
Anyways, I kept digging deeper and kept grabbing more Bocelli and Brightman and even found some Tony Bennett in there.
But today, driving home and having this playing, yeah I got funny looks as I drove along, but the drive felt so much different.
tomorrow I'll put down some of the classical music that I downloaded.
