Most of my stuff is from Kijiji, other than my patio furniture. And it's all worked out pretty well. But I have bought a few things from Urban Barn, and all of it is solid, well made furniture.
I think I have two items from EQ3, and my sense is it's like moderately higher quality Ikea stuff. Not a fan.

We're in the process of furnishing our new place as well. There are 8-10 places in Deerfoot Meadows all very close to each other with various styles and prices, my advice is to check them all out and see what you like. The only place I wouldn't recommend is Sofa Land, as I found their salespeople to be pushy. But Leon's, Ashley, Urban Barn, Structube all had things that we could have bought for a fair price.
So far, we've found a sofa chaise and coffee table from Urban Barn, and a TV stand from IKEA. With my wife and I's personal taste Urban Barn and Structube seem to have the best fit. Just picked up the following on Tuesday:
Also remember that most of these places are furniture dealers.... they do not make their own brands. Check the brands and compare the different dealers for pricing. Some are cheaper because they buy by the containers.
Check out Stylus sofa, and elite sofa. They are both sofa companies custom made out of BC. There are many styles and configurations with your choice of fabric and seat options.

Check out EQ3.
All the upholstery is Canadian-made in Winnipeg.
A lot of modern and mid-century modern designs.

My wife likes to bottom feed at Pottery Barn. She waits for the floor models to go on sale and buys the ones that are still mint condition. If you take the long approach you can save 50+%.

TL;DR - Don't subscribe to a brand thing. Aim of items you like and just get those. Agree on other suggestions for getting a few "artists notes" from an interior designer would be invaluable.
Spoiler!
I'm in the same boat. But since I have the notes from a professional stager, I think my approach is a bit different.
I've looked at Pier 1 imports, JYSK, IKEA, EQ3, Williams Sonoma, Amazon, The Brick, Costco, Kinkaid... list goes on.
Personally, I believe you need to have a good idea of what you want because style wise, sometimes what you have in mind won't be in the modern selection stuff and only shows up in an IKEA or something. Furthermore, IMO, color coordination and even fabric coordination is more important than style.
Leather and fabric aren't the best match even if the colors match. But clashing colors is worse and makes your furniture selection looks like a dog's breakfast. I've also been to friend's places where their furniture is really nice, but it's uncomfortable being there because the furniture is babied and you're told you're enjoying $30k worth of stuff in a room (more like worried about it, amirite?). White leather is nice, but you might need to be aware of individuals wearing raw denim. You could stain the leather. Sometimes suede works well with fabric, stuff like that.
I've wandered into "can't miss" places like EQ3 and walked out barely liking a thing. I've walked into IKEA and liked certain things and had long debates regarding the "stigma of cheap furniture". I personally believe no one generally can tell furniture brands (unless crazy) but most everyone can tell poor match ups of furniture. Even if someone sees something and goes, "hey, that's IKEA". It won't be an issue unless the item doesn't match the rest of the place.
Agreed also on floor models. Great place to save a dime if they're in good condition. Only issue I have is my table apparently is missing bolts (didn't think it was a huge issue, but man I've been having a hell of a time finding them, but I think I'm close (M6 size bolts with an allan key head or phillips head are surprisingly difficult to find).
I think it's easier to get a good feel for the style/colors you're looking for and go to different stores with said style/color in mind and just have the "will this fit with our vision" talk with the significant other as well as the "yes it will, but are we willing to pay that?" talk too.
We really liked country living furnishings on 17th (they have a location down south too). Not to be confused with Country Furniture. They have an in house design team that will come map out your house and do up some drawings of different ideas. Was a bit of a leap of faith to just trust in what they told us to do but it ended up looking great and we're really happy with all the furniture. They sell stylus brand sofas which are Canadian made.
