Yup. Woodwards was like the fashionable department store and Woolworths was the disscount store. Clothes at Woodwards, toys at Woolworths.

It used to be tough to choose a department store with Woodward's, Woolworth's and Woolco all trying to woo you.

I think it was called Digits?

Was the bakery mentioned above a Grandma Lee’s?

Also, Chinook had a Mark’s and Spencer, until they closed around 2000.

If you're looking for another great retro Calgary channel, Blendeture is one of my favourite subscriptions. It's a little more 1990s than 1980s, but still very good.

I remember on local channels when they ran out of commercials to play, they'd have these scenes of the Calgary skyline from a field, sometimes with a couple of horses wandering by, and strangely hypnotic elevator music.

I kind of want to find them again but can't even think of what to type in the search box..."Calgary local television dead air filler"?

Is there any way we can find out about what her incredible news was?

Krazy Krazy and their bait and switch ads in the Calgary Sun. You couldn't fit more text onto a page!

And to link this with another topic in this thread, I believe there was a Woolco just up the road from McMahon at Northland Village.

Yes, the Northland Walmart was one that was converted from a Woolco back in 1994.

I remember when there was a channel that was just typed white text on a red background, it was news stories. There was a blue band at the top that did either sports scores or weather. And a green band at the bottom that did the other.
If there was nothing good on the other 3 channels thats what you watched.

IIRC that was channel 4. In the early 80's it was the best way to see what the temperature was outside.
