Not from there but my wife is from Fruitvale. Go to Champion Lake, Collander for sure anf if you want a big hike , go to Kokanee Glacier by Nelson! Have fun.

I'm from Fruitvale, which is just outside of Trail.
Things to do there: Go back to where you came from!
As mentioned, people like Champion Lakes. There are three of them, but most just go to the main one. The others are a bit of a hike. Giro Park in Trail is a big grassy park and there is the Columbia River. Be very careful of under currents. If you are unfamiliar with them, don't go in the water. There are other places to swim. If you walk from Giro Park towards Sunningdale there are some neat facts about Trail and where the original settlers came from on the plaques.
There seriously isn't much to do there, and it gets pretty muggy in the summer because of the mountain enclosures. I highly recommend a trip out to Ainsworth Hot Springs. It's a fun drive, and is a cool spot. See how long you can spend in the cold pool. Have dinner in Nelson on your way home.

Definitely another vote for the colander special. Christina lake is a nice spot but a little bit of a drive.

If you stay in Trail Gyro Park has a Splash Park and a beach on the mighty Columbia.......Warfield which is 3 km from Trail has a nice outdoor pool with a small water slide. Aquatic centre in Trail is also a nice spot to escape the heat.

Sorry to say, but Trail is a ####hole of a town.
That being said, if you have to be there, Gyro Park, as someone mentioned, might be a solid idea. It should be pretty hot in Trail this weekend so cooling off by the water would be a good plan.

I was born in Trail and while I haven't spent too much time there, I'll pile on with the S*%@%hole town opinion. It's boring, depressing, and sickeningly muggy.
I have a house next to Gyro park, which is a nice place to picnic next to the river but other than that, the Colander is the only positive thing I can think of. Ainsworth hot springs are great but probably 90 minutes away.

From coworkers that are from Trail, my main takeaways are that the place is a dump. Key highlights from the last 20 years seem to be the fact the DQ turned into an A&W and getting Walmart.

Thanks for the heads up. Sounds like there a couple things to do there. And a whole lotta sh##hole.
Think I'll really take my time getting to Trail from Fernie on Sunday. Get in late and maybe spend Monday just bombing around the area checking out the mentioned things. Heading to Nelson Tuesday morning.
