Coaches want to have a margin that equates a scoring play. Like 7 points for TD+1point convert or a 3 point field goal

It doesn’t matter if it’s early or late in the game,
So if you’re up by 1 before a convert, getting another point to go up by 2 would mean the other team could lead anyways if they get a field goal for 3 points.
If you’re up by 3 by a successful 2 point convert, that means the other team could only tie you if they get a field goal
