Default PODCASTS!!!: Recommend (or don't) a podcast

Hey everyone,

I'm needing something for long walks around the neighborhood, and I hate books on tape, but I think I'd be into a podcast. The only problem is, I have no idea where to start and I don't want to waste my time, so I figured I'd go right to the brainthrust of CP to figure out what podcasts to check out.

If you recommend one, please describe the themes briefly so I have a sense of it. I'm open to any suggestions!

Again, I know virtually nothing about podcasts, so feel free to explain things to me like I'm 5 years old.

What are your interests?

If you like the TV show Scrubs, Fake Doctors, Real Friends with Zach and Donald launched today.

If you like hockey, Spittin Chiclets is pretty good if you don't mind some bro talk.

If you like fantasy, Critical Role or the Glass Cannon podcast are pretty good.

If you like things like TED talks, they post most of them as podcasts so pretty much any topic you want to get into.

Joe Rogan is a bit of a twit himself, and when he's got his comedy or fight buddies on its usually not all that interesting. But he brings in interesting guests and lets them talk while asking them some unconventional questions so when he has someone worth listening to its good.

I've found myself laughing a lot at Tom Segura and his wife Christina Pazsitzky doing their Your Mom's House podcast. They really play off each other well.

StarTalk can be cool if you like Neil DeGrasse Tyson and science.

Glass Connon is great too, people acting out their DnD games. Its pretty entertaining.

True crime (which really got me into podcasts) that are the staple like Serial, but I found way way better:

- Culpable
- In the Dark
- Murderville
- Hunting Warhead
- Who the hell is hamish
- To live and die in LA
- Somebody knows something
- Up and vanished

Not true crime but more expose:
- The Dream
- Gangster Capitalism
- The Gateway
Fiction Podcasts (that tell really fun stories that make you think you are listening to a real podcast happening) which are my second fave and total time waster:

- Rabbits
- Tanis
- Black Tapes
- Blackwood
- Limetown

I love these animated clips made from the audio of the podcast:

My favorites right now:

How Did This Get Made?
-Comedians/actors Paul Scheer, Jason Mantzoukas, and June Diane Raphael watch terrible movies and then analyze them in hilarious detail.

Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend
-Basically it's just Conan interviewing various comedians, musicians, and celebs. And it's very, very funny.

Broken Record
-Music podcast hosted by Malcolm Gladwell and Rick Rubin. Their recent episode about Tom Petty was fantastic.

S-Town: Starts as a call to investigate a rumored murder cover up in a small town and turns into something completely different.

Pretty well anything by Wondery will be engaging, especially true crime.

Man in the Window: about the hunt for the Golden State Killer.

The Shrink Next Door: about the decades long manipulation and control by a psychiatrist over his patient.

Dirty John: you've probably heard the story. Amazing podcast.

Gladiator: The story of Aaron Hernandez.

In the Dark: True crime serial.

Someone Knows Something: a CBC true crime podcast. Not a bad season in the bunch.

Cali would you mind renaming the thread? They look the same from the main forum. It’s confusing for simpletons like myself.

Sean Carroll's Mindscape Podcast is a good science-y one, he is more into the physics side of things but he has diverse guests on from all areas. It can get pretty deep into the weeds sometimes, but I always find it interesting.

Astronomy Cast is another focused on astronomy.

Main Engine Cut Off is a nice podcast about the space industry and what's going on.

I just started listening to podcasts last summer, but one I like is Extremities. It's three seasons now and they're all about remote islands. Svalbard, Pitcairn and St. Helena. Svalbard is probably the most interesting because it's an international zone.

I think 31 Thoughts is still going. If you can handle Marek and Eliotte's false modesty and smugness.

It really depends on what you want to hear about. But I listen to allot of podcasts and I've sampled even more, so I could recommend something for most topics.

If you're new to podcasts I would always recommend starting with The History of Rome. Mike has a great prospective on the world, and the characters from Roman history are just the greatest humanity has ever created. Even though the show wraps up 1500 years ago it is very informative about how/why we have the world that we have today. It's been wrapped for about 7 years, and its only about 80 hours long in total, which isn't too bad for a series like this.

Personally right now I'm listening to the British History Podcast, if you have about 400 hours to spare, and that's almost gotten him up to the Normand Conquest. As a follow up to the history of Rome, if you are interested in the rise of the Anglosphere its interest, but it moves very very slow, be prepared for the guy to spend 7 hours on some minor king of wessex history majors couldn't name.

Freakenomics is a good weekly for obscure/interesting ideas. 45 minutes where they drill not too deep into one question.

I'll second Sean Carrols Mindscape, for long form science / philosophy conversations, but there are allot of good long form conversation podcasts out there, I would just try a few until you find one you like if this is what your looking for, I listen to allot of podcasts and I only seem to have time for about 3 of these in my feed at any given time.

News I'm on the Economists consolidated feed, where I get all of their podcasts. Its actually very hard to find good Canadian news podcasts or World News. Almost all of the good ones are very US focused.

Science news, I like the Skeptics Guide to the Universe, I usually have 3 or 4 science news podcasts in my feed, but this on is the one I would probably keep if I had to cut it down. usually about 1 hours /week. You get a half dozen science news items, and some good conversation on how to critically interpret them, a few gimicky quiz segments you can play along with every week.

And one infrequent one I've kind of enjoyed, What Trump Can Teach us about Con Law. Not really targeted at Canadians, but you get a real constitutional law professor explaining how Trumps criminality stacks up in the scope of history.

True Crime: Serial and S-Town are certainly the place to start. Suspense drama, cliffhangers.

Unsolicited opinion: Sam Harris and Joe Rogan are swill. 100% chance if you ask for podcasts recommendations you will get these two. But they are just white noise, you will not finish your walk any smarter for having listened to those two.

Canadian Focused, the docket is probably the best, but it not regularly released and very focused on legal proceedings.

Alberta Focused, I haven't really found anything I like right now but there's Daveberta you could try out.

Calgary focused, I would say the Sprawl

Hockey focused probably 31 thoughts.

Dan Carlin - Hardcore History : Blueprint to Armageddon.

It’s the best podcast I’ve ever listened to.

I agree, but I also think the Dna Carlin 6 hour long episodes are a little dense for someone trying out their first podcast.

Cali, I know you’re a film fan like myself! I recommend The Rewatchables, if you don’t mind Bill Simmons it can be a very enjoyable and informative podcast. I also enjoy The Big Picture (also from The Ringer), a great listen for anyone that likes movies the way we do.
