People still watch HNIC intermissions? Maybe if I want to take a nap or something like that…

I think the bump was relevant obviously. Context and relativity govern most things in society.

A lookback is in order.

What Cherry said was offsite but should that comment have tubed a career? No way in my opinion.

And I still don't get what was so offensive about Milbury's comment that he had to be yanked off the air.

It didn’t tube a career. It ended a contract that was going to expire anyway. I shed no tears.

If anything ended his career it was just him sliding into irrelevancy. The fact he couldn’t keep his trap shut like that was just what goes with that territory.

Why the eff not.
What Cherry said was ignorant and racist.
Eff him. He should have been fired years ago and finally got what he deserved. He should be remembered as an ignorant racist fool.
And what Milbury said was stupid and sexist.

Eff them both.
There shouldn't be tolerance for this.

Cherry said many questionable/ racist things before this. Complaining that this one event shouldnt have gotten him fired is somehow ignoring his long history of tickling his throat with his toes.

I honestly feel that the side that rails against things like the firing of Cherry, think the rest of us actually belong to an organization called: Cancel Culture. We have committee meetings, benefits & team bonding sessions and decide who's going to get fired.

lol it's simply public opinion, optics and the company/organization themselves that make the decision.

Cherry’s comment was absolutely cause for dumping him. There’s no place for it.

I blame Rogers for Cherry getting fired. I am no Cherry fan but he deserved a better send off for his career as whether you agreed with him or not he was a Canadian icon. Rogers in chasing ratings kept him on air long past his prime and it was inevitable in this day and age that he would put his foot in his mouth to this extent. IMO Rogers Sportsnet is the worst thing that's ever happened to Canadian televised sports.

So Rogers got him fired because they didn’t fire him/rehired him earlier?

"You people love... you people that come here... you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey... at least you can pay a couple of bucks for a poppy or something like that. These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada, these guys paid the biggest price."

Of course he lost his job. I can't believe people are really obtuse enough to not be able to understand this. We can argue pedantics and semantics about what he said all day long, but none of it matters.

For future reference:

Good conversations that can have some sort of progressive impact:
re: poppies
- Why are poppy sales down?
- What are some other ways we can take a moment to remember war veterans, as well as provide a source of financial support?
re: immigration
- What are the impacts of immigration?
- Why do some countries allow it and others do not?
- Should Canada allow immigration?
- What are Canada's immigration policies and procedures?
- Are there areas which should be strengthened or loosened?

Bad conversations that have no measurable amount of beneficial outcome:
re: literally any topic of conversation
- Anything that starts with "You people..."
- Anything that can be boiled down to "Get out of my country"

They should have kindly asked him to retire. That's how it was done with Ed Whalen who wanted to continue calling Flames games even when it was apparent he was having issues.

Woah. Difference between Ed slowing down v. Cherry being a bigot.

Yeah I was like... wait a minute... I don't remember Ed ever going on national TV, waving his finger in the air and accusing immigrants of anything...

You are missing the point. I'm not debating about whether he should have been fired or not. I feel he shouldn't have been on air in the first place and we can go through many threads before he was fired and you will see most fans had tuned him out and he was borderline irrelevant. Rogers never cared if he was a ticking time bomb as they were only concerned with ratings. I just think it would have been better if they let him go and he faded away rather than keeping him on air as long as possible before the inevitable clash with today's social status. I'm sure many posters here have elderly grandparents that may not be in tune with today's culture but at least they don't get blown up in front of everyone. I just think it was a little irresponsible for Rogers to continue to milk him.
