the beloved dad on "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" -- has died at age 65 .. TMZ has learned.
Sources close to the actor tell TMZ he died in an L.A. hospital last night. Avery had recently undergone surgery for an undisclosed illness and took a turn for the worse late yesterday.
And we're told ... his wife, Barbara, had been at his bedside but left for a short period of time and when she came back ... she learned he had just died.
These clips just serve to remind us of what a waste of talent Will Smith's career has been after this series playing the same seemingly tired, awful character, movie after movie.
Will Smith is the black Keanu Reeves.
Oh look, its The Fresh Prince as a fighter pilot against aliens. Oh look, its The Fresh Prince as a detective in the future. Oh look, it's the Fresh Prince as Dr. Col. Something Something fighting zombies in New York.

Fresh Prince was a huge part of the fabric of my upbringing, and I've definitely seen every episode at least two or three times. This is sad news. Avery was a "classically trained" actor and you could see that come through in a lot of the performances on Fresh Prince.
May his atomic dust continue to percolate through the universe, striking fear into our hearts for our misdoings.

This part made me laugh. Will Smith turned down the role of Neo to do Wild Wild West. Keanu got that part instead. The similarities are hilarious.
Well.....wow....for a scence from Fresh Prince, that was pretty powerful.
Fresh Prince was always quietly a show that didn't shy away from whipping a good message at the audience. The relationship between Will and Uncle Phil was one of my favorites in TV history; Will's character CRAVES a father figure, and I always felt that it was admirable that Phil treated that responsibility seriously, rather than just being upset that he was saddled with this brat.
RIP Mr Avery, you did wonderful work.
And for my money, the pool hall episode is the best thing in the entire series. And I love the entire series. But you just know when they made that episode, everyone was like 'this is what makes us famous'

This is one of my favourite Uncle Phil moments, sorry for bad quality:
