Anybody going to any CIFF screenings this year? The only show I have tickets for is Triangle Of Sadness on Saturday night and I can’t wait. This is my first year volunteering at the festival and I’m looking forward to it.
Going to Riceboy Sleeps and Next Exit this weekend. Little bit of a coin flip as to the movie quality, but really looking forward to it.
Old news now but in case others haven't seen them.
I finally got around to watching the new Thor movie. It started off so stupid that I was sure it was going to be a dream sequence, then it just kept getting dumber. First time I turned off a Marvel movie half way through, surprised because I liked the other Thor movies.
Then decided to turn on the new Top Gun, what a difference. Just an excellent movie the whole way through, a little bit of cheese as expected but what a thrill ride!
Surprised there too because I thought the first movie was massively overrated.
Just watched Bodies Bodies Bodies, a newer A24 film.
It was just ok. A couple funny moments for a black comedy but I don't think it accomplished what was intended but I mainly found all the characters unlikeable enough to impact my enjoyment while watching.
For a similar but superior type of black comedy, I'd recommend Thoroughbreds from 2017.
I had an extra day off this week from Hurricane Ian, so I decided to go see a matinee. I chose Bullet Train.
I don't get the bad reviews or mediocre response from audiences. I thought this was a really fun movie. Reminded me a little of Lock Stock... or Snatch, with multiple people involved in a plot all with their own motivations and flashbacks. However, there's some really great character portrayals in here that have a little bit of depth. I found myself actually caring about what happens to some of these characters. Surprising for what is essentially an action movie. It's also quite funny throughout, mostly driven by Brad Pitt's character's existential crisis and seemingly fatalistic role in these other character's stories. I really enjoyed Brian Tyree Henry and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (who I haven't seen since his lead in the Kick-Ass movies). They really carried a lot of the film.
Sure, it's a bit silly and over the top, and maybe not the most faithful adaptation of the book, but what else is new for hollywood?
I recommend.

Maverick - I don't get the hype at all. Were they trying to poke fun at themselves? Every scene was embarrassingly cheesy. I kept joking with my wife that they were going to cut to a shirtless volleyball scene any moment and then sure enough.... shirtless football. I left at that point. Almost as bad as WW84.
Honestly if you haven’t seen Maverick by now you’re not their target audience. For me, it was the most fun I’ve had at the movie theatre in a long time.

Completely agree, similar to what I said about 'Bullet Train' Maverick was a bill of goods.
It sold you exactly what it promised to sell you, if not more.
I remember when I walked out saying that it was vain, pedantic, predictable schlock and the most fun I've had at a movie in recent memory.
