They are using all of their LTIR. Most likely Toronto will still need to trade a player, but I don't think it has to happen before the season begins.

Knew Dubas would be the first one to fold. Makes it harder for the other GMs to get reasonable deals.

The funny part is that the leafs only have 1 pro dman under contract after this season.
Luckily, you can't really build a contender with a bargain bin shopped defence

All the other players simply waited for Marner to sign, knowing Dubas would back up the Brinks truck.

Yeah, they can only win games Andersen keeps them in. Much like a certain other team, they aren't playing for shutouts

Hyman and Dermott can't be activated from LTIR until room is made.

I thought Dubas was a genius GM, that's why he was brought in so young. What happened? This seems like Toronto is going to be handcuffed.

The NHL is shifting. Free agency this summer showed that with only the absolute dregs of the NHL overspending on UFAs (Skinner in Buffalo, Myers in Vancouver).
Younger players are getting paid going forward, and non-elite UFAs are going to get squeezed. That said, Marner’s AAV, McDavid’s, etc. really aren’t out of whack %-wise when viewed historically. Top players get paid.
If I’m the Flames, I’m offering 9-10M per to Tkachuk to get 8 years and hoping it works.

Dubas signed a 5.75M left shot UFA winger a year before Tkachuk was due for an inevitible and massive pay raise?
Next you're gonna tell me Dubas uses Tapatalk.

“MLSE” is going to have to buy a few hundred million in jerseys to increase league revenue so the cap goes up next year.

Yeah to the masses who were roasting him for turning down 7x11 (highly doubt that actually happened)
This seems better all around...the leak was pure PR
Same reason Wal-Mart prices things for $7.99 and not $8 even

It’s still possible he turned down $11x7.
Rumour was he wanted nothing longer than 5 years, rumor was the Leafs offered the $11M over 7/8 year terms.
This just means they came down a year a term and he turned down $100k a year to be a UFA 1 year earlier.

I didn't say it wasn't possible I just doubt it....pretty convenient we get a "leak" hours before the deal is signed. Just like when McDavid's contract was leaked and came in slightly less a day later.
Happens with many of these high profile signings

Leafs forward salary bias is going to screw them over. 4 players making 40 million+ combined, is absolutely crazy.
