Edit: go to this https://goo.gl/maps/e8UQRqtw7csr7B7j9 park in the evening! There were so many things going on and the people watching was unbelievable. Anything from dogs playing, to a soccer game, to jugglers/other 'showman' practicing.
Yeah, I'm living about 2 blocks north of here.
It's awesome!

Went there are visiting Mies' Barcelona Pavilion.
We got in for free because it was after 6 on a Tuesday (I think it was a Tuesday).
Definitely worth it! They had some really interesting exhibits, and I saw my first Picasso irl.

Our strategy at the beginning was at 6 or 7 to walk as far as we could from the hotel until we found a place we liked or we didn't want to walk anymore. We then progressively made our way back to the hotel eating 1-2 tapas at each place we stopped (with drinks to support). If we really liked a place of course we would stay longer or go back another night. There are so many places to eat and so much variety...it is really about personal tastes. Especially if you are in the city I recommend you just let yourself get lost in it. Every block has something new to explore and something that may be interesting to you...for me....I found the highly recommended places overcrowded and often overrated, but then I found other corners and restaurants of the city that I could spend months enjoying.

In my first two weeks here, I feel like I've done an accidental survey of Barcelona restraunts' patatas bravas.
Best has been this amazing chicken place with half chickens for 6.50 euros, and cheap but good bottles of cava for 8 euro.

I hope you like your seafood "fishy". I think the people have covered all the museums already, and the architecture is obvious and I am sure you know about it. Drink a lot of Spanish wine. Try pizza at Don Kilo - I think you mentioned you were coming with kids - all the more reason. Pizzeria Da Nanni near Cathedral Plaza is a great hole in the wall. There is a fantastic gelatto place just off there too... Gelaati di Marco - the pistaccio is particularly amazing. Viana for dinner.

Bump...

Planning a trip to Barcelona next fall to kick off a few weeks of vacation.

Will be there for a few days before boarding a Covid Cruise (LOL) Ship for a trip around Italy...

Any recommendations for a hotel near the ports that is central for restaurants / sight seeing etc ???

Thanks.

Highly recommend to check out Vilanova i la Geltrú...its a sleepy town about 40 minutes outside of Barcelona thats right on the ocean. Great little getaway with great bars and beaches. Very easy to get to via train or cab.

When we did our cruise from Barcelona we stayed at the Four Points Sheraton Diagonal which wasn't too special in any way but fairly central, close to the port, and more affordable than a lot of hotels.

Anything within a few blocks of the water will suffice honestly. It's a big city with a lot to see so "central" is relative.

For hotels, I will recommend somewhere central with multiple metro lines such as Placa d'Espanya or Placa de'Catalunya.

We had a good time visiting Sagarda Familia, Park Guell, and also the Picasso Museum.

For the guys, you may want to go to Nou Camp if time permits to see some FC Barcelona things.

For the ladies, who will say no to a trip to the La Roca Village outlet where you can get Gucci, Moncler, Balengiaca, etc. at like half the price? Plus you get your VAT refund at the airport. You do have to buy tickets for the shuttle bus in advance for the 45-minute trip, and it is 22 Euro per person. But it is well worth it.

Pizza Circus is the best pizza place in the city. Worth fist fighting someone who says otherwise.

The beach in Barcelona is nothing special, as beaches go. La Sagrada Familia is spectacular and you will definitely be missing out if you don't visit it.
